Will Muschamp Hires 49ers Great As New Gators Defensive Line Coach
Apparently, Charlie Weis isn't the only Notre Dame alum heading to Gainesville. It has been reported that Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp has added the final piece to his staff in Bryant Young.
Young, who spent his entire career with San Francisco, played 14 seasons in the NFL before calling it quits in 2007. The former All-American was selected to four pro bowls (1996, 1999, 2001-02) during his career and won a Super Bowl with the 49ers in 1994. He notched 89.5 career sacks and was tabbed to the NFL's All-Decade team for the 1990's.
Since retiring, Young served as a graduate assistant under Charlie Weis at Notre Dame in 2009 before spending his lone season as defensive line coach at San Jose State in 2010.
Gator fans might be asking themselves what does this mean for Gator football? While Young may not have a long resume in terms of coaching experience, he makes up with his experience on the gridiron.
When visiting inside the homes of players such as Timmy Jernigan, the former first-round pick can show the kids a glimpse of their future while attending Florida. He impresses the recruits with his Super Bowl ring, Pro Bowl selections and his status as a first-round pick. Anyone who plays football strives to mirror Young's success.
As for parents, Young will sell his performance in the classroom. He graduated from Notre Dame with a marketing degree. He will stress the importance of the "Muschamp Way" in which the players will obtain a degree while seeking to realize their dream of NFL stardom.
Young's hiring wraps up Muschamp's inaugural staff. He joins Dan Quinn (defensive coordinator), Charlie Weis (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach), Travaris Robinson (defensive backs), D.J. Durkin (linebackers/special teams), Stan Drayton (running backs coach/recruiting coordinator), Frank Verducci (offensive line), Aubrey Hill (wide receivers) and Brian White (tight ends).
