A Controversy is Coming for the Cal Bears
As much as I hate to say it, but there's two controversies coming. One will go away fast and that is "Did Jeff Tedford do the wrong thing by leaving on Friday instead of Thursday to get to Maryland?"
The reason is because of the three-hour time difference in Maryland than in California. The answer is yes, he should have had them there on Thursday night instead of Friday night.
The second one will remain all season if it doesn't go well. Right now it's not going too well with Kevin Riley as the starting quarterback. I'm not putting all of the loss against Maryland on Riley, but a lot of it has to do with playcalling and lack of execution.
Riley has looked far from impressive except for after Longshore was put it and through the two interceptions. It lit a fire under Riley who played extremely well after he was put back in.
Onto the Washington State game should this really even count as a game? Washington State is trying to figure things out over there and it doesn't look like they will be winning very many games anytime soon. Yet, Riley looked far from stellar against the Cougars. Going 6-14 against the Cougars who's defense hasn't been their strongest point this year. Yes, It was a huge lead but Riley doesn't seem to have a favorite receiver to go too and that will spell trouble for the Bears.
Another thing is that Longshore has played on the road and the road crowd wouldn't be a huge factor as it would be for Riley. He just hasn't looked impressive too me this year and it's nice to have this situation for the Bears having two qb's who can start for the team. It's time to maybe keep it open right now because it seems that Riley needs to know that his job isn't safe if he plays bad. I think that is a benefit for the team to have that competition.
The loss can be put squarely on the offensive side of the ball. They didn't execute when they needed to. The defense wasn't stellar by any stretch of the imagination but they did get some turnovers for Maryland but the Bears came away with nothing. Also, there can be blamed placed on the official for not calling a safety when Da'Rel Scott was tackled in the end zone. The Bears offensive line which was supposed to be it's strong point allowed for at least 5 sacks and a lot of pressure was put on Riley who didn't handle it very well for the most part he did have some nice escape from being sacked.
