The Heisman Trophy: Who's Next?

Joe Burgett Sep 13, 2008

The Heisman Trophy, the biggest individual award given in college football history, can only be won by proving to be the best player in the entire country. To earn such an honor a player must be consistent, game in and game out, and it doesn't always matter if the team wins.

The only thing that matters really is how well he plays as a football player; we have seen that not every Heisman winner was also a national champion or even undefeated—Tim Tebow, last years Heisman winner, lost three games with Florida. He played well, however, and captured the trophy.

There has only been one man to win it twice, and that man's name was Archie Griffin. It's possible we could see it be won twice again by Tebow, and if the junior does win this year and comes back next year and wins it again, we could see the first-ever three-time Heisman winner.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves; the season has just started, and there are many worthy players out there who want that trophy. My personal favorite would have to be Tebow, though. I mean, like I said, he is the reigning Heisman winner, so he has to be at the top of everyone's list.

But you have a few more like Missouri's Chase Daniel—he had a great season last year and just seems like one of the best last year who really finished in the Heisman race unfairly. I think he will have a chip on his shoulder and prove to people why he deserves the Heisman.

Those are the only two to me right now, at least; you may have a surprise person pop up this year, though—it's possible. I may have to rewrite this article just to fit him in it. But until then, these two are the only ones that are on my list to watch.

With Chris "Beanie" Wells going down, at least we know that a potential candidate is out of the race, but I might have to eat my words if he plays and performs well today against USC, but I see Ohio State losing that game, and I don't think he will be much of a factor—just my opinion.

But what's yours? Who do you think by year's end will win the prestigous Heisman Memorial Trophy?
