Denard Robinson: Should He Stay and Try to Save Michigan Football?

Tom EdringtonJan 13, 2011

Denard Robinson isn't talking.

Brady Hoke is in at Michigan, but no one knows if quarterback extraordinaire Denard Robinson is going to join him.

Robinson was one of college football's most electric players last season. He was the first in NCAA history to run for 1,500-plus yards and throw for 1,500-plus yards.

Now, he's pondering his future and you have to wonder if he's staying or leaving Big Blue.

He met Hoke who sang Robinson's praises when he was introduced as the new boss of the Big House. "We want his future to be at Michigan," Hoke offered. "We have a special guy in Denard."

Robinson's reaction was "no comment."

No truth to the rumor that he was taking media-handling 101 from AD Dave Brandon.

While Robinson's not talking, his old high school coach down there in Deerfield Beach, Fla., is. "Denard loves Michigan," says Art Taylor, who has worn out a few cell phone batteries the past week or so. Seems he's getting calls from college coaches who want Robinson to transfer. "He has to do what's best for him because this is a big decision," Taylor added.

Which begs the magic question: Should Robinson stay and do his best to bring Michigan back to life?

Sure Hoke said Robinson is "special", but is he special enough to lead an offense that may be far different from what he ran last fall?

"Smashmouth," was the term that Brandon used when he talked about Michigan's hoped-for football persona. In other words, sounds like Brandon wants Michigan to become Wisconsin.

Instead of saying Robinson is "special" Hoke might have added, "and we look forward to having him run our offense."

What may have Robinson leery is that the new offensive coordinator is Al Borges. Hoke brought him from San Diego State. Borges runs pro-style offenses that call for traditional pocket passers and that may have Robinson concerned, to say the least.

With Tate Forcier likely gone, and Robinson teetering, the Wolverines have Devin Gardner, a 6'4", 215-pound lad who physically looks like a pocket passer.

Hoke has a real dilemma. How do you not work your offense around the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year?

If it is as Robinson's old coach says it is and Robinson really and truly "loves Michigan" then he might want to stay and become part of the resurrection, if there is to be one in Ann Arbor.

He still has the stage, that 100,000-plus football cathedral waiting for him and that's a lot of exposure for any player.

He has mad skills, he's part human-highlight reel.

Still, there's "no comment" in this ongoing drama on the Maize and Blue Matinee Network.

Part One of "Who Will It Be" is over with Hoke named to the lead role.

This latest episode may be even more important and Michgan's been through this before. When Rich Rod was hired, there was a freshman named Ryan Mallett who left for Arkansas and that turned out pretty well for the 6'7" passer.

Now Robinson has a decision staring at him.

Denard Robinson, is he a faithful Michigan Man or Turncoat Transfer?

Stay tuned.
