Wladimir Klitschko: "David Haye Is a Piece Of Sh*t"
An emotional Wladimir Klitschko has made his feelings about his UK nemesis, David Haye, crystal clear in a new interview with ESPN.com.
The heavyweight champion from Ukraine says that the most recent contract negotiations between the two rivals for a fight on July 2 fell apart over a lack of trust.
Haye and his manager/trainer Adam Booth, according to Wladimir, have enjoyed wasting the Klitschko brothers' time in the past, and the champion is certain they would like to do so again.
"They lied to me about Chelsea Stadium in 2009 [Haye promised to deliver the UK venue for a fight and then reneged], then they lied to my brother [Haye pulled out of negotiations with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali at the last minute to take a fight with Nicolay Valuev instead]. There have a been a lot of lies from David Haye and Adam Booth," Klitschko opined.
"We found a date, July 2, to fight him, but I don't trust these guys anymore and Chisora is a great warm-up fight for me."
Klitschko is worried that Haye and Booth, who insisted that Wlad not take an interim fight with the UK's Dereck Chisora (who Wladimir was scheduled to fight last December, only to have a stomach injury force a postponement), were ready to pull the rug out from under him once again, leaving him with no opponent to fight for the first half of 2011.
"If I agree [not to take an interim bout], he could have backed out and taken Chisora, which is a great pay-per-view for him in Britain. He could give [Ruslan] Chagaev step-aside money and then I'm going to be there with nobody to fight," said Klitschko.
"Because of our history before, I would fight him July 2 and we would work on the contract, but I would fight Chisora first and make sure I fight."
Meanwhile, to almost no one's surprise, Haye's fight with the mandatory challenger for his WBA paper belt, Ruslan Chagaev, already appears headed for trouble because of the latter man's hepatitis B status (Chagaev is not sick, but carries the virus in his bloodstream).
A letter obtained by Boxingscene.com, dated June 4, 2009, and written by British Board General Secretary Robert W. Smith, states: "With regard to the above [Ruslan Chagaev], I have spoken to Dr. Roger Evans and a number of his medical colleagues and I can confirm that Mr. Chagaev will not be permitted to box in Great Britain."
As Haye is almost certainly not going to be willing to fight Chagaev outside of Merrie Olde England, it is very doubtful that this matchup is ever going to take place, leaving Haye's boxing future in disarray.
For his part, Wladimir Klitschko feels that David Haye—who says he will retire in October of this year—as a heavyweight has been a flop, more talk than action, and the normally reserved heavyweight champion isn't shy about saying so.
"David Haye is a piece of sh*t," says Klitschko, flatly.
"He has accomplished nothing in the heavyweight division other than to present himself with his stupid T-shirt and comments. He thinks he's the king, but the king doesn't make the king. The people decide who is king. He thinks he'll walk away from this sport having accomplished everything when he's accomplished nothing. He says his legacy is done? That is complete bullsh*t. I'm getting emotional but it's totally ridiculous. The man lies."
