Manny Pacquiao: A Best of List for Boxing's Pound-for-Pound Champ
There's one thing for certain when it comes to Manny Pacquiao fans: you all are an opinionated bunch.
Not that I'm complaining.
As we begin 2011, time for a little more fun. Call it a "best of" list for boxing's pound-for-pound champ. When you're dealing with someone of Pacquiao's magnitude, it leaves room for a wide variety of categories. Some of it is amusing, some is just cool to watch and some of it will get you debating once again.
So enjoy. Here's a "best of" collection for Manny:
15. Best Duet
1 of 15Manny does enjoy singing and here he teams up with Will Ferrell to sing the John Lennon classic "Imagine."
It's very random, but also hilarious.
14. Best Sighting
2 of 15The story recently came out that UFC champion Georges St. Pierre traveled to the Philippines to work with Freddie Roach and improve his boxing skills. It was there that GSP got to meet Pacquiao.
Not too often you get to see two fighters of this caliber in the same room together.
This is an actual news report from the Philippines of the encounter.
13. Biggest Use of Hyperbole
3 of 15
The award goes to promoter Bob Arum, who told 60 Minutes, "Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter I've ever seen." Best of this generation? Probably. But best ever? Better than Muhammad Ali, or Marvelous Marvin Hagler (both of whom Arum promoted)?
I can't go that far.
12. Best Fact You Probably Didn't Know
4 of 15Besides being a great boxer, Pacquiao is also a pool shark. Some of his games have been for $30,000.
11. Best Training Video
5 of 15Since boxing is barely covered anymore in newspapers, your best source of information is on the web. Some sites even take it up a notch with great interviews, and videos of fighters like Pacquiao training and sparring. If you've followed the sport for a long time, one of the biggest treats is seeing either old footage of a fighter's amateur or early pro fights, or clips from sparring sessions.
10. Talk About Paying Respect
6 of 15It's one thing to be adored by fans and your fellow countrymen, but it's a whole different thing when former champions weigh in and pay respect. That was the case in this spot here, which includes comments from Winky Wright, Lennox Lewis and Sugar Ray Leonard.
9. Best Retirement Gift
7 of 15
In 2008, Pacquiao sent Oscar De La Hoya into retirement when he delivered a thorough beating to the Golden Boy. De La Hoya retired after eight rounds and didn't answer the bell to begin the ninth, ending a great career that probably should've been over four years earlier when he lost to Bernard Hopkins.
8. Worst Beating
8 of 15
That award goes to Antonio Margarito in a landslide. Doesn't it still make you hurt looking at this picture? De La Hoya comes in a close second here.
7. Best Commercial
9 of 15Not too often do you get to see a gruesome fight clip in a commercial. Pacquiao also had an appearance in NIKE's "Boom" commercial.
6. Best Win
10 of 15Pacquiao's emergence came in 2003, when he defeated then Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera by technical knockout in the 11th round at the Alamodome in San Antonio. From there, Pacquiao's career took off, but it all began here.
5. Best Fight
11 of 15Following his technical knockout of Barrera, Pacquiao's next fight was against Barrera's fellow countryman, Juan Manuel Marquez.
It looked like the fight would be a quick one when Pacquiao knocked Marquez down three times in the first round, but Marquez rallied and displayed incredible resiliency as the fight ended in a dramatic draw.
4. Best Interview
12 of 15Got to hand it to 60 Minutes for its profile of Pacquiao. The legendary news show gave fans a great look at Pacquiao, especially away from the ring.
3. Best Rivalry
13 of 15
Pacquiao's two fights with Juan Manuel Marquez were both dramatic and action-packed. You've got to give this a slight edge over his trilogy with Erik Morales.
2. Biggest Accomplishment
14 of 15
Pacquiao's won eight world titles in eight different weight classes, but what makes his career so impressive are wins over future Hall of Famers like Barrera, Morales and De La Hoya.
1. Best Knockout
15 of 15Pretty easy here. It's Pacquiao's brutal knockout of Ricky Hatton.
