Chauncey Billups Intends To End His Career with Denver Nuggets

Jess Matthew BeltranJan 10, 2011

“Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave and grow old wanting to get back to.”

It has been such a long journey for Chauncey Billups. It was like picking up the pieces of a puzzle along a narrow road.

Looking back on his career, it wasn’t always one happy memory, but it was always a journey worth remembering. It was his leadership that brought his career to 14 years, longer than he ever expected. After being the third overall pick by the Boston Celtics in 1997, Chauncey played with five different teams and had been traded multiple times. The ride was bumpy, but a good leader always needs to learn from experience.

Now, the New Jersey Nets want to include Chauncey Billups in trade negotiations with Denver before the trade deadline. It was a move to lure Carmelo Anthony to finally seal the deal and play with them.

Chauncey is someone Melo really respects, and someone who could lead a team. The Nets also included Richard Hamilton from the Detroit Pistons, a former Billups teammate for six years. It looks really promising with center Brook Lopez manning the paint. However, Chauncey wants no part of such a move. He never even entertained the thought about moving out of Denver. It is his home, where his family and his friends are, and he plans to retire where it all began.

The promise of another championship, another magical run towards the finish line before Billups calls it a career, is always a lucrative thought. But it was never a reason to get selfish and leave everything behind. Denver would never be the same without Anthony, but it should not be the reason for Billups to let go. He knows he still has a lot left on his legs, and what Denver surely needs is a good leader after its best player goes out. The captain never abandons his ship.

Chauncey Billups' career has been through a long and winding journey, and he’s glad he's home. No championships or money can offer that. He intends to end his career in a place where he always wanted to go back.
