Minnesota Vikings: Would Mike Singletary and Josh McDaniels Help The Vikes?

Brandon BeckerJan 7, 2011

Mike Singletary and Josh McDaniels were both fired as head coaches this past season leaving them unemployed. Word on the street is that they could soon be employed via the Minnesota Vikings. Leslie Frazier officially has the job as Minnesota's head coach and it's being reported that he's looking for a new offensive coordinator.

The Vikings current offensive coordinator is Darrell Bevell, who could be out of luck as he was Brad Childress' choice. It's clear that Frazier wants to bring in his guys to help turn the ship around in Minnesota. If that means getting rid of Bevell and others, so be it. Those are the tough choices you have to make when you're hired to lead a franchise.

But is bringing in Singletary and McDaniels really the answer?

McDaniels was the youngest head coach in the NFL at 34 years old, and it proved to be too much too soon for him. It's likely McDaniels will get another head coaching gig at some point in the future but returning as a coordinator is his best bet for now.

As for the Vikings potentially bringing him in, it would be a very good move. McDaniels proved that he could be a successful coordinator when he was with New England, and he obviously did a good enough job to land the Denver job.

Taking a step back and focusing just on the offensive side of the ball will allow McDaniels to flourish once again.

While the Broncos struggled this season, the quarterback position was hardly the problem. McDaniels did wonders with Kyle Orton—something that will look good on his resume seeing as the Vikes need to add a young QB through the draft.

Another reason to bring in McDaniels is the high energy and passion he brings to the game. Everyone got to see his youthful exuberance after he defeated the Patriots in his first season with the Broncos. Players want to play for coaches that care about the game just as much as they do, which brings me to Singletary.

Singletary is a motivator, a Hall of Famer and highly regarded around the league. While he didn't have success as a head coach with San Francisco, in a smaller role he fits in nice. Frazier is said to want to bring him in to coach the Vikings' linebackers.

Singletary coached the ultra talented Patrick Willis with the 49ers, so it's no surprise Frazier would want him to work his magic in Minnesota.

If Frazier's goal is to bring in high energy guys who have had success outside of being a head coach, Singletary and McDaniels look like great options. There's no doubt that McDaniels will most likely jump at the opportunity to become an OC again. Convincing Singletary to coach linebackers could be a different story.

Singletary could either take some time off and possibly do TV work or wait and see if he gets an offer to become a defensive coordinator. Even if the Vikings are unable to land Singletary, I like the way Frazier is thinking.

When it's all said and done, if the Vikes are able to land both, it would be one of the better coaching staffs in the NFL. And after the Childress debacle, it's exactly what the organization needs.
