Under Armour All-American Game: Red Team Wins 24-22 in Thrilling Fashion
The 2011 Under Armour Game proved to be every bit worth the price of admission with the Red Team defeating the White Team 24—22 with a last second field goal by 4—star kicker Andre Heidari. 4—star quarterback Kielh Frazier orchestrated a perfect drive to set the Red Team up for a chip—shot to put it away as time expired.
The game got off to a defensive—dominated start, with the contest tied 0—0 at the close of the first quarter, as the defensive line dictated the action early.
The second quarter was a different tune though. Quarterbacks from both teams began to get into rhythm and show what they're capable of.
4—star quarterback Max Wittek, one of the top pro—style passers in the nation and a USC commitment, strung together seven competitions in a row to get the White Team on the board first with a 27—yard field goal attempt.
It wasn't long before 5—star quarterback Brett Hundley, the top prospect from UCLA's 2011 recruiting class, connected with 4—star wide receiver Devon Blackmon for a 58—yard touchdown pass mid—way through the second quarter to put the Red Team on top 7—3.
Hundley threw a perfect pass to a streaking Blackmon who simply flew by the defense on the score.
Things really got going from there.
5—star safety Karlos Williams intercepted a tipped pass mid—way through the third quarter and then returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to put the White Team up 9—7. The response on the other side of the field was quick.
4—star wide receiver Bradly Sylve had a 92—yard kick return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff and 5—star quarterback Jeff Driskel followed that up with a 63—yard scamper shortly after. This brough the score to 21—9 in favor of the White Team.
Driskel showed off his athletic ability yet again on the play as he sliced through the defense with relative effortlessness. Known as a pocket passer, Driskel has shown he can be a whole lot more than that when given the chance.
The fourth quarter appeared as though it belonged to 4—star quarterback Max Wittek.
First he drove the White Team down the field in a hurry mid-way through the fourth, capping the drive with a short touchdown pass to 4—star receiver Jarvis Landry to pull the White Team within five points at 21—16.
Wittek followed that up with a 59—yard strike to 4—star receiver Malcolm Mitchell to put the White Team on top 22—21 with 1:47 left to play.
From there, it was up to Frazier to do what he does best.
Win games.
Fraizier calmly led the Red Team down the field in the final seconds of the game. The highlight of the drive a long completion to 3—star receiver Eli Rodgers to set up a 27—yard field goal to ice the game.
Of course, this thrilling game couldn’t end that simply.
On the field goal attempt the White Team blitzed down the middle and blocked the kick, but a penalty was called on the play due to what was deemed an illegal blitz by the officiating crew.
On the second attempt Heidari buried the kick between the uprights and sealed the win in thrilling fashion for the Red Team.
The contest was filled with exciting moments throughout the game and turned out to be the tough—fought battle many expected entering the evening.
