Why Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao Didn't Fight Last Year

Troy SparksJan 4, 2011

This cat and mouse game between two of boxing's most-recognized figures in the game today is ridiculous.  The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would've been historic if other things didn't get in the way.

For starters, the negotiations between the two sides should've been smooth sailing.  One fighter was willing to negotiate a deal and the other was too stubborn to cooperate.

If Mayweather and Pacquiao would've fought late last year, it would've been a huge draw on TV and at the box office.  Just think that both fighters would've made a ton of money, maybe enough to buy a small island.

But when you ponder and think for a moment why the fight didn't happen last year and why it may not happen this year, it would frustrate everyone who follows boxing.

I found proof that Mayweather ducked the questions about him fighting Pacquiao.  He couldn't come clean about denying that he's scared of the pound-for-pound champ.

Mayweather was supposed to appear on the George Lopez Show while he trained for his fight against Shane Mosley.  Lopez told Oscar De La Hoya, who was on the show, that they called Mayweather to come on the show.  When Lopez asked Mayweather about Pacquiao, he went off by cursing and saying, "I'm not going to do this.  Why are you asking me through the phone?"

Mayweather was asked about Pacquiao on the Pardon The Interruption show by Michael Wilbon.  He avoided mentioning the Filipino's name on national TV.  Floyd didn't have a problem with bullying Mosley at one of their press conferences and shoving him.  I guarantee Floyd wouldn't have done that to Manny.

Since Mayweather is his own boss and doesn't have a promoter, he tried to negotiate their deal under his own terms.  Pacquiao would've agreed to drug testing up until 24 days before their much-anticipated fight.

Pacquiao, on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show, said that if he was bigger than Mayweather, then agreeing to be tested under his opponent's terms was fine.  Pacquiao didn't agree to test closer to fight night because he's smaller than Mayweather, and that would've given the undefeated foghter an unfair advantage.

The conditions that Mayweather demanded was too risky if the testing was done closer to the fight date.  Plus, Mayweather wanted a test conducted by USADA.

Mosley admitted that his body was drained from complying with the Olympic-style testing during his training for the Mayweather fight on HBO's 24/7.  Maybe that was the unfair advantage Mayweather was looking for, and it worked in his victory over Mosley.

According to Pacquiao, a fighter's job is to train hard and step in the ring to fight.  He didn't think changing the drug testing rules to benefit the other fighter made sense.

Millions of boxing fans are disappointed that the megafight wasn't negotiated because of some minor disagreements between the two sides.  If Don King was brought into the mix the very first time Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank talked about putting the deal together, everything would've been signed, sealed and delivered.
