Vince Young Has Hurt Feelings, Knee

Eric JosephsonSep 10, 2008

In the off-season and in to the pre-season, the Tennessee Titans had a goal for Vince Young. Minimize turnovers. That's it. Just manage the game and let his talent do the rest.

Sunday afternoon when Young threw his second bonehead interception of the game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, the fans at Nashville's LP Field had enough.

They booed the starting quarterback.

Looking back in history, you probably can't find a quarterback that hasn't been booed at some point in his career. Apparently Vince Young thought he'd be the first. After walking off the field, Young slammed his helmet down and proceeded to pout.

Head in hands, he sat on the bench and wouldn't acknowledge offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger. Young was hurt. Not physically, but emotionally.

Three plays the later, the defense was forcing a Jacksonville punt. After returning the punt, the offense ran on to the field, minus Young. He was still hurt. While ten men stood on the Tennessee side of the ball, their fearless leader still sat on the bench, moping about the reaction he got from the Tennessee faithful.

Finally, after a visit from Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, Young took the field. Four plays later, Young went down with a knee injury. But the damage was already done. Vince Young was hurt long before that play. His ego, his psyche, his feelings...hurt.

The news came out of Nashville on Tuesday that Young had a sprained MCL. That typically would keep a player out 2-4 weeks. But Titans staff wouldn't speculate on how long Young would be out. Why? Because who knows when Young will come back.

Vince Young's mother, Felicia Young, indicated to The Tennessean that Vince doesn't want to play football and is hurting inside and out.

"What would you think, if you were tired of being ridiculed and persecuted and talked about and not being treated very well, what would you do? What kind of decision would you make?" Felicia Young told reporters.

Vince Young won't be playing for the Titans when they travel to Cincinnati on Sunday, and who knows when he will return. Do Titans fans really care?

The question has to be asked, who would want the leader of their team to be this emotionally fragile? Talent aside, it's apparent Vince Young isn't fit to take a team to the Super Bowl.

Fans weren't wrong for booing Vince on Sunday. Their patience has run out on a guy drafted high and pegged as the savior for a franchise in a slump since going to the Super Bowl in the '99 season.

How much longer before the front office loses their patience too?
