NBA's Top 10 Point Guards

Steven ResnickSep 9, 2008

1. Chris Paul

This is a no brainer—he's the best point guard in the league. He does everything that a great point guard is supposed to do. He can get you a rebound, he plays defense, he's an excellent passer, and he can score when he needs to. Lastly, he can get to the rim as well.

2. Deron Williams

He has all the tools to be the No. 1 point guard in the league. What Williams needs to work on is his defense. He's also a solid finisher in the lane, he shoots well from beyond the arc, and is a great distributor.

If Deron Williams learned how to post up on the smaller defender, he could have a huge advantage over Paul, who's more of a slasher.

3. Baron Davis

I had a tough time determining if he would be No. 2, but in the end it's the concern of him being injured. He's also doesn't shoot as well as the other two.

He does have the post game and the ability to guard bigger players. Plus, Baron has more playoff experience, and can say that he has led a team that was eighth seed past a No. 1 seed.

4. Tony Parker

The reason he's down so low even though he's got the championship rings is because he isn't really an outside threat. He can get to the lane because he's got the speed to blow by people. He also needs to work on his defense so he can average more steals.

5. Chauncey Billups

He's got the rings and is a solid defender. Billups is also known for hitting big shots, especially in the playoffs. He's not as solid of a distributor as Parker is, however.

6. Rajon Rondo

He showed during the playoff run that he could hit some big shots. He's a solid defender. He does need to work on his outside shot as well as becoming a distributor.

The key here is that he's young and he has Doc Rivers as his mentor. As he matures his shooting percentage will go up from both the free throw line and from the floor.

I'm sure the Suns are kicking themselves for not keeping Rondo.

7. Andre Miller

He can play the up and down style or in the half court. The issue with him is that he doesn't really have an outside game. He's a pretty good defender and a good leader, though.

8. Jason Kidd

Even though at his age he's slowing down, he's still one of the best in the league at distributing the ball. Just look at how he helped Dirk Nowitizki shoot a higher percentage once he started at point guard for the Mavs.

Kidd is a solid rebounder, an exceptional passer, and completely unselfish. His only issue is something that has plagued him throughout his career: he doesn't have a good outside game.

9. Jose Calderon

He really stepped up last year after the scary injury to TJ Ford, so in the offseason the Raptors let go of Ford and gave their starting point guard opening to Calderon.

He shot well from the field. He just needs to bring the scoring up a little and work on his defense.

10. Mo Williams

Williams could shoot up the rankings now that he's with the Cavaliers. He's a capable scorer and needs to improve on distributing the ball better, but that should be easier for him with LeBron James as a teammate.

He has a solid offensive game, but needs to work on his defensive skills.
