Manny Pacquiao: A Look At What 2011 Has in Store for Him
Manny Pacquiao has a lot in store for him in 2011.
Aside from his scheduled fight against Shane Mosley on May 7, there are plenty of opportunities for him to capitalize on.
As a global icon and ambassador to the sport of boxing, it opens up numerous avenues for Pacquiao to take advantage of, and he'll continue to do that in 2011.
So, what should Pacquiao expect in the new year?
10. Make an Impact As Congressman
1 of 10
Manny Pacquiao was inducted in as Congressman to represent Sarangani province in the Philippines.
While he has participated in government affairs for his country, he has yet to do anything of true importance during his short tenure.
Pacquiao will change all that in 2011 and take initiative, using his status and image in order to do so.
9. Guest Appearance on WWE
2 of 10
Former WWE star Batista was part of Manny Pacquiao's entourage for his fight against Ricky Hatton.
In 2011, Pacquiao will return the favor in a guest appearance on WWE with Batista at his side.
WWE is known for having celebrity guest hosts, and Pacquiao can help spread his image by joining the list.
8. Cash Money
3 of 10
Manny Pacquiao rakes in huge paydays from his bouts. He also has endorsement deals with companies such as Nike and San Miguel beer that continue to add to his fortune.
Pacquiao cashed in on $38 million this past year and he's set to make just as much in 2011.
Whether or not he fights Floyd Mayweather in a bout that would surely break all records, Pacquiao will be just fine in terms of money flow.
7. 12 Rounds of Embarrassment for Shane Mosley
4 of 10
Shane Mosley will be completely outmatched on fight night against Manny Pacquiao. The match will be a near mirror image of Mosley's fight with Floyd Mayweather, except Mosley will be shut out.
Mosley is fading fast and he's way past his prime. He can still compete in boxing, but not against the top competition. His bout with Sergio Mora was proof of that.
Sure, he beat Antonio Margaritoโand Pacquiao just rearranged Margarito's faceโbut Mosley looks nothing like the fighter that took down the Tijuana Tornado.
6. The Mayweather Family Doing What They Do Best
5 of 10
The Mayweather family and their big mouths have been absent from the media in light of their legal troubles.
However, once those are cleared up, expect the Mayweather family to do what they do best: run their mouths.
Sooner or later, a verbal barrage will come spewing out. It's an inevitability.
5. He Will Shut Juan Manuel Marquez Up
6 of 10
After Manny Pacquiao takes care of Shane Mosley, he'll fight the man that logically makes the most sense as his next opponent and the man he should be fighting instead of Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez.
I believe at this point in their careers, Pacquiao has surpassed Marquez by a wide margin and that those two great fights they had in the past will stay in the past. Pacquiao will easily take down Marquez in a fight that will complete their trilogy.
This way, you will no longer hear Marquez blabbering on about how he can beat Pacquiao and that he won in each of their first two meetings.
4. Tension Between Manny Pacquiao and Bob Arum
7 of 10
Sure, Bob Arum secures lucrative paydays for Manny Pacquiao, but it's hard not to do when you have a global icon and the best pound-for-pound boxer as your main asset.
However, looking at not only his next opponent, Shane Mosley, but a fighter like Joshua Clottey, one has to think if Arum really has Pacquiao's best interests at heart.
Even Freddie Roach and Arum's relationship appears to have soured a bit and Pacquiao could be headed in that same direction.
3. Stranglehold Atop the Sport
8 of 10
Manny Pacquiao is the pound-for-pound king and he's atop the boxing world.
Next year will be no different as he'll continue his dominance of the competition and reign on top.
His list of challengers have narrowed down to only a handful of fighters, with only one being seen as a true threat to his sovereignty.
2. A Second Year Without a Fighter of the Year Award
9 of 10
Sergio Martinez walked away with Fighter of the Year honors in 2010 after Manny Pacquiao captured that award for two consecutive years. Pacquiao has claimed that award three times in the last five years.
However, much like this year, Pacquiao will again walk away at the end of 2011 without a Fighter of the Year award.
Simply put, the competition will not be enough to garner such an accomplishment. Not to mention, there are very few accolades left for him to capture.
1. A Missed Opportunity
10 of 10
Yes, I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing about it, but it's the biggest story surrounding boxing even if it hasn't come to fruition.
Manny Pacquiao will not see Floyd Mayweather in the ring this year, and that matchup may never come to light.
A fight of this magnitude would help inject some life back into the sport, and it would answer one of the biggest questions surround the two fighters: who is the better fighter and pound-for-pound king?
