Manny Pacquiao: 10 Reasons His 2011 Could Be Better Than 2010
Manny Pacquiao has had a great year.
There have been wins over Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito, winning a seat in Congress in the Philippines and remaining boxing's pound-for-pound best fighter.
There's little remaining for Pacquiao to accomplish. Only a handful of boxers are considered worthy opponents. He has elected to fight Shane Mosley in his next fight on May 7, and there are still fans hoping he will eventually face Floyd Mayweather Jr. Some even wish he would fight middleweight king Sergio Martinez.
Beyond opposition, he doesn't need to win any more titles. He's already won eight championships in eight divisions.
As good as 2010 has been, next year could be even better. Time for some fun and a few predictions. Here are 10 reasons that 2011 could be just as memorable for Pacquiao.
10. The Chance to Support GSP
1 of 10
Boxing's best has met one of the world's best MMA fighters. Georges St. Pierre recently worked with Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's longtime trainer, on his boxing skills.
Pacquiao fights maybe twice a year at most. Might as well have fun and be ringside when St. Pierre returns, especially if it's against Anderson "Spider" Silva.
9. Releases His Own Video Game and Documentary
2 of 10
He's already a national icon back home in the Philippines, but Pacquiao will expand his brand even more with the release of his own boxing video game and a documentary about his life.
Don't be surprised if both are successful, especially the documentary. Boxing has been at the center of some of the best sports documentaries, including When We Were Kings, Ken Burns' Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson and the recent look at Mike Tyson entitled Tyson.
8. Shane Mosley Gets Injured
3 of 10
No fighter likes to get a fight called off, but this will be for the best when Shane Mosley announces he sustained an injury while training.
This fight has been ripped to shreds already by the media and boxing fans, and Pacquiao has received just as much criticism as promoter Bob Arum for agreeing to fight Mosley.
7. Success in Politics
4 of 10
Manny Pacquiao already has a career waiting for him after boxing is over. Don't be shocked if he has an immediate positive impact on his country now that he's a Congressman.
It's one thing to give fans great fights to watch, but it's way more important to help provide jobs, fight poverty and crime and give kids a chance at a decent education.
6. Manny Goes with Andre Berto Instead
5 of 10
With Mosley injured, Manny Pacquiao decides to give the young Andre Berto a shot. He may not be a known name to average sports fans, but it will least be more compelling to see if Berto has what it takes to push Pacquiao and challenge him.
Berto will also save Pacquiao from further ridicule of electing to get another easy payday if he were to have fought Mosley.
5. Manny Passes Two Tests
6 of 10
After grinding out a tough win over Andre Berto, it's announced Manny Pacquiao passed a drug test before and after the fight.
Pacquiao filed a defamation lawsuit against Floyd Mayweather Jr., his father and Golden Boy Promotions in December 2009 after they alleged he took performance-enhancing drugs. The only way for Pacquiao to stop this talk is to continue to submit to testing for PEDs.
4. Sees His Countryman Win
7 of 10
Don't be shocked if Manny Pacquiao isn't the only Filipino who is successful next year. World champion Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KOs) is considered the heir apparent to Pacquiao in their home country and is set to face Fernando Montiel for the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles on Feb. 19.
3. Agrees to the Fight
8 of 10
Floyd Mayweather Jr. settles his legal issues, Pacquiao wins his fight on May 7 and the two finally give fans what they've yearned for, agreeing to a fight in December 2011.
2. Mind Games Fail
9 of 10
If there's one thing Floyd Mayweather excels at besides boxing, it's trash talking. Watch during their promotional tour as he tries to get under Pacquiao's skin and fails miserably.
1. Calling It a Career
10 of 10
2011 will end on a high note. Pacquiao will win a decision over Mayweather and then announce that he's through and retire from boxing.
