Jay Rome: Top Tight End Recruit Down to Final Four Schools
Jay Rome is one of the most highly-touted college football recruits in the nation.
The top-ranked tight end has the size, speed, athleticism and hands to succeed at the next level and beyond. With the national signing period set to begin in February, the next five weeks will sure be wild for Rome and many of the other top-ranked recruits in the country.
Here is a breakdown of Rome’s final four schools and where I think he’ll end up:
Clemson
The Tigers were the early favorite as Rome’s father, Stan, played his college football at Clemson, but the rumors of Jay committing to play next year for the Tigers have cooled of a bit.
Stan King was quoted as saying that he doesn’t want his son to go to Clemson just because he went there. You have to think that the Tigers, who went 6-6 last year in the ACC, don’t stand much of a chance when looking at the powerful SEC schools on Rome’s final list.
Tennessee
The mystery team in the Jay Rome sweepstakes, Tennessee crept in to grab the tight end’s attention, which came as a bit of a surprise. According to an ESPN recruiting report, though, Rome is leaning more towards the Vols than many may think.
Last year, Tennessee lured highly-touted Da’Rick Rogers from Georgia. The Vols may very well repeat history.
Alabama
Nick Saban sure talks a good game and the Tide are still the defending national champions. Rome has also apparently listed Alabama as one of his favorites.
At Alabama, Rome would be thrust into the spotlight that is SEC football and play for one of college football’s most storied programs. But much like Jadeveon Clowney, who could opt for South Carolina over ‘Bama because of the proximity to home, I’m willing to bet Rome ends up the final school on the list.
Georgia
The Georgia native may weigh the fact that Athens isn’t too far from home when selecting which school he’ll attend, but the fact that he can immediately make an impact with the Bulldogs weighs heavier.
If Rome ends up selecting Georgia, which I believe he will, he’ll be able immediately jump in and begin making a difference. Georgia endured an uncharacteristic 6-6 season and will be looking for new and talented players to take over in big roles.
The top-ranked tight end in the country, Jay Rome is the perfect man for the job and the University of Georgia is the perfect place for him.
