Dramatic Win For Lewis Hamilton in Belgian Grand Prix
I'm a big fan of Formula One and love watching it every second weekend, but I've never felt compelled to write about it. Until today. The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps had everything: rain, wind, crashes, brilliant driving, and most of all, drama.
It was a brilliant win for Lewis Hamilton, who overcame wind and rain to win the race in what was probably one of the slowest finishing laps I've seen. But he might count himself slightly lucky to win after the unfortunate spin-off by Kimi Raikkonen on the penultimate lap.
Raikkonen and Hamilton were edge-to-edge on the penultimate lap, frequently colliding and overtaking each other, until Raikkonen just pushed that bit too hard and subsequently spun-off and crashed into the wall, ending his hopes of a podium finish. This gave under-preforming teammate Felipe Massa the chance to take second.
It was a dramatic end to the race as a series of drivers tried to take advantage of Raikkonen's spin-off. Felipe Massa, Nick Heidfeld, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica and even Sebastian Bourdais were all vying for a podium finish. Massa and Heidfeld got the other two podium places behind Hamilton, in a dramatic finishing lap that at one point even saw Sebastian Bourdais in third.
The win now takes Hamilton eight points clear of Massa, and a whopping 23 points clear of current world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
Although the Finn might be counted unlucky not to take any points today as he battled his way through the rain to hold the lead for much of the race. He held off the challenge of Hamilton and even towards the end was still holding off the McLaren driver.
But he lost it when it really mattered, and could not handle both the rain and the challenge of Hamilton, as he crashed into the wall, watching his fellow drivers past by, and most likely, his championship hopes as well.
A ninth win in Formula One and fifth of the season for Lewis Hamilton, who fought back brilliantly, and perhaps even deserved the win had Raikkonen not crashed.
Another great victory for Lweis Hamilton to push him ever closer to the Drivers' Championship. Another great grand prix in an exciting Formula One season, and another one that had the rain, the wind, the brilliant driving, the unfortunate crashes, and of course, the drama.
Another great grand prix that tells me exactly why I follow Formula One. Let's hope for more next week in Italy.
