WWE TLC 2010 Results: 10 Things We Learned From the Event
Hello, Buzzers. Buzz is back.
WWE's final pay-per-view of the year, TLC, is now over. Overall, it was a decent PPV that involved few great matches.
Now, the road to one of the biggest and most exciting WWE events, Royal Rumble, has officially begun.
Until then, let's take a look back at last night's PPV and break down ten things we learned from the event.
All said and done, let the show begin.
1. The PPV Was Predictable With No Major Surprises
1 of 11
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it was bad, but let's be honest here. Didn't the majority of wrestling fans call most results correctly? I mean anyone with half brain could have predicted the results.
The Intercontinental Championship match and the Divas match were a bit tricky for some people, but still, it wasn't hard to predict the winners.
As for the other matches, who had a doubt that Morrison, Miz, Edge or Cena were going to win?
Again, I say that this isn't necessarily a bad thing as I enjoyed some matches but they were predictable with no surprises. Yes, some people expected some superstars to return or others to turn on their partners (Beth Phoenix, David Otunga), but nothing happened.
2. The IC Ladder Match Didn't Live Up To The Hype
2 of 11
When WWE announced the match, I automatically named it as the show stealer. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
Again, don't get me wrong here. The match was entertaining and It did have some cool spots, but at certain moments, I had a feeling that the action was getting slow. Furthermore, it got little time only, and that was disappointing given the fact that we had three great competitors in this match.
The match had a weird ending when both Kingston and Swagger dropped the belt just for Ziggler to grab it and snatch the victory.
Again, not a bad match, but it was short, and it was expected to be much better when looking at the three competitors in this match. In other words, a decent match that couldn't live up to the hype of being the match of the night.
3. The Divas Can Be Good If Given More Time and Prominence
3 of 11
First, let me say that this was a good Divas match, and I'm glad it was given enough time. I hope WWE keep using the more talented Divas in the future and keep the less talented Divas away until they improve. Sure, we're still missing Melina and Gail Kim, but let's hope they get their pushes soon.
Unfortunately, many people are still referring to the so called botched ending and ignoring the whole match. The table might have not broken when Laycool were thrown to it, but Natalya amazingly fixed it by jumping of the rope onto the poor BFFs for the win. That's it, no need to keep referring to it as a botch.
Ever since she won the Divas Title, Natalya has been on a great run. Last night was no different as she was able to showcase her talents and prove that she deserved the push long time ago.
Beth Phoenix, on the other hand, showed her skills and strength but, unfortunately, she took a weird looking and nasty bump that seemed painful. Luckily, she wasn't injured.
As for Laycool, they had their moments during the match and at a certain moment, it seemed that they were about to win, but it seems that their glory days are over for now.
Overall, that was a good Divas match and I hope we see different feuds so that the division don't become stale and repetitive with the same feud.
4. The Tag-Team Match Was a Waste Of Time
4 of 11
So WWE decided to do their usual habit by adding another last-minute announced match. But what was the point of this match? Nothing.
Before I start, let me say that I'm not annoyed about the fact that the tag-team championship belts are getting more time and matches again, but the match was pointless last night.
After few minutes, Husky Harris and Michael McGillicutty interfered in the match causing a disqualification.
Later, Nexus attacked Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov and destroyed them. Wade Barret nailed them with bunch of chair-shots sending a message to John Cena.
So what was the point of this match? To add a tag-team match? We could have lived without it with such an outcome.
Was it to put Nexus over? Again? For the Hundredth time? Haven't we seen this before?
It would have been better had they booked Daniel Bryan in a match instead. I know he wrestled against Ted Dibiase in a dark match, but an on-screen match could have been better than this match.
5. John Morrison Stole The Show
5 of 11
After months of jobbing, struggling and being thrown in random matches, John Morrison is finally back to the main-event scene. And what a way to return!
This has to be the match of the night by any means. Both Morrison and Sheamus put great performance, and the match was full of crazy bumps.
Each superstar used the ladder in any possible way to destroy his opponent and grab the hanged contract. Morrison even sold a knee injury pretty well.
In the end, the Shaman of Sexy was able to get the contract after a painful kick to the face of King Sheamus and become the new number one contender for the WWE Championship.
Definitely deserves to be called the match of the night.
As for the Celtic Warrior, he can still enjoy being the King of the Ring until Triple H returns.
6. The Miz Stole The Victory
6 of 11
Did you expect a different outcome? Of course the majority didn't.
Did you expect a controversial ending? Of course the majority did.
Just like his first match against Jerry "The King" Lawler, the Miz stole another title victory, this time, against the former champion himself, Randy Orton.
The battle had two controversial endings. During the match, Miz accidentally hit the referee and knocked him off. Alex Riley jumped to the ring just to end being power-bombed through the table by the Viper. Next, Miz hit the SCF on Orton and moved Riley away and put Orton in his place on the broken table. When the referee saw Orton, he rang the bell and declared Miz as the winner.
Yes, Miz pulled an "Eddie Guerrero" trick and fooled the official. However, once the referee saw the replay, he restarted the match and thank goodness he did this because it made sense.
Unfortunately for Orton, he only lasted one minute before he found himself falling through the table outside the ring after Miz pushed Riley towards him.
Miz has retained the WWE Championship.
It's no secret that Miz is booked as the underdog champion, so don't be surprised to see most of his title matches end in a similar maneuver.
Now he'll have to worry about his former partner, John Morrison, who seems to be on a great run.
As for Orton, let's see what's next for him.
7. Edge Grabbed His First Ever Clean and Uncontroversial World Title Victory
7 of 11
First, I have to say that this was another great match that can be considered as the match of the night too. It involved some amazing spots and breath-taking bumps. Every superstar went through a table in this battle, and the highlight of the match was Del Rio tossed from the top of the ladder through the table at ring-side. This should have been the main event match. In the end, Edge was able to win.
The Rated "R" Superstar is now a ten-time World Champion! After more than 18 months of not winning any title, Edge was finally able to win and claim his tenth World Title.
Now listen to me before you start scratching your head and questioning the title of this slide. For years, Edge has been claimed by people as a paper champion for two reasons.
First, he's criticized for not having any clean title win in his resume. Of course, technically speaking, his win against Cena was clean with nobody involved. But we all know that he won after cashing in his MITB against an exhausted Cena who just came out of a brutal match. Same goes with his win against Undertaker.
He also won cleanly in the Elimination Chamber match, but this came after controversy as he wasn't supposed to be in this match to start with. Same goes with his win in the triple-threat match against HHH and Kozlov.
No need to give you a history lesson on the controversy that surrounded all his title wins and defenses.
No doubt that this was done to solidify his Ultimate Opportunist gimmick and I had no problem with it, but other wrestling fans did. In fact, Edge is among my top three favorite superstars.
However, Edge has finally won cleanly with no sign of any controversy involved. Again, I say that I had no problem with his wins before but fans always questioned his victories.
Other things that Edge was criticized for were his short title reigns. Of course, we still can't tell for how long he'll hold the title, but let's see if he can keep it until Wrestlemania.
I'll also have to say that this is the first time he holds a title as a face.
It's obvious that his rivalry against Kane will continue for the next few weeks. Honestly speaking, I think that Kane had a good title reign but I feel sorry for him because the second part of the reign wasn't booked well.
As for Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio, their addition to the title match was great as it definitely added more excitement to it.
As soon as Del Rio was announced as a contender to the World Heavyweight Championship, many typical IWC whiners started questioning this decision by WWE. As usual, we heard the same "Why was he pushed before X?" Or "Why wasn't Y pushed before?"
I'm glad he didn't win, or else numerous articles complaining about his win would have flooded the wrestling sites.
Anyway, it's obvious that two superstars will continue with their feud on Smackdown.
8. Big Show and Cody Rhodes Are Smackdown's New Comedians
8 of 11
So what if RAW has Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov? Smackdown now has Cody Rhodes and Big Show.
Before I go on, I'm not necessarily saying that this is a bad thing. In fact, I'll leave the judgement to the fans.
I wasn't going to mention this segment, but I felt that I couldn't cover the show without writing about it.
Ever since he debuted his "Dashing" gimmick, Rhodes has been involved in some weird vignettes where he teaches us how to become "Dashing." He sure seemed to be receiving a push, but the comedy side was always apparent in his matches as he always tries to protect his face and he always looks at the mirror during this matches.
As for Big Show, that's not the first time we see him involved in funny segments especially when he started promoting his new movie, Knucklehead.
Unfortunately, Show is a sad case. The guy nearly crushed every superstar he feuded with on Smackdown, but still, there doesn't seem to be any direction for him.
Like I said before, I'm not writing about this to bash the superstars here. In fact, I found Cody Rhodes' promo hilarious.
9. CM Punk Might Be Getting Ready To Feud With John Cena
9 of 11
As the show went on, most fans missed a certain superstar on the commentary. He was none other than CM Punk.
However, the "Straight Edge Superstar" made a surprise appearance and joined the commentary team to call John Cena's match.
During the match, it was obvious that Punk was still upset about Cena spilling his soda.
All joking aside, many people noticed that Punk isn't really a fan of Cena (that's not new) when listening to his commentary.
Before the PPV match last night, many people were anticipating a possible future feud between the two that could start during Punk's commentary time.
Punks' appearance in Cena's match just made those anticipations seem true.
So what do you think? Will this be a future rivalry?
Only time will tell us.
10. John Cena Destroyed Wade Barret and Nexus
10 of 11
Yes, John Cena is back. The face of WWE is back. The indestructible force is back.
No matter what happens to Cena, WWE always find a way to put him back to the same track he's been on for the past five years.
Last night, Cena simply crushed and destroyed Wade Barret. The Nexus leader had no chance whatsoever against the previously fired and newly rehired former champ.
The match was even booked as the main event of the PPV.
After the match, Cena continued with the punishment and even buried his former leader under chairs.
I guess WWE wanted to show Cena as a frustrated person who finally got his revenge.
However, I guess that this feud has to end once and for all.
First, why was this the main event? Is it because Cena/Nexus feud has been the top rivalry of 2010? Maybe.
Why did Punk join commentary? I discussed this in the previous slide, but this is a question that should be asked.
Where were the Nexus members? Weren't they supposed to help Barret? Or did they think that attacking Santino and Vladimir was enough?
Where was David Otunga? Is he injured after what Cena did to him? Is he pleased with Barret's treatment?
Anyway, moving on, what's left for this feud? What is left for Cena to do?
He joined the group, he got fired, he got rehired and finally he returned and destroyed the stable. During all these moments, many interesting things could have happened, but WWE decided to go with the easy way.
After last night, I guess it's easy to say that we're now back to the beginning. Everything Nexus did has been destroyed.
I know that Cena was going to win and I'm not questioning his victory, but I'm only asking how long will this feud last?
Will there be more twists added to the story? If yes, will they make sense? How can we be guaranteed that they won't end in the same way as before?
Moreover, why did Nexus attack Undertaker? Will Otunga reveal the secret? Do you still think that Nexus has a mastermind behind them?
Hundreds of questions can be asked, but the main question remains "Will this rivalry go on? For how long? What will they do to try and make it interesting?"
Final Thoughts
11 of 11
As I said, in the introduction slide, that was a good PPV that had two epic matches. Nothing surprising about the outcomes but the action was crazy.
We're only ten days away from the end of 2010. Let's just forget about all the cons we witnessed during this year and hope that 2011 will bring us better shows and events.
Royal Rumble is the next PPV, and this is one of my favorite shows. Until then, happy holidays to all members here.
That's it for now, folks.
All thoughts and comments are welcome.
