College Football Week One - Lessons Learned
College football week one is now history. Most fans are still standing behind their teams and looking forward to another Saturday. Others may be wishing that they could call for a "do-over" or a "mulligan"... anything just to wipe that first game off the schedule and start over.
But of course we all know that in college football anything can happen. Any team, any week, any stadium across the country may bring us that upset that ruins our hopes and our dreams. Just ask Michigan, or Virginia Tech.
So here are a few things I learned this past Saturday (and Monday)... Maybe they will be helpful in preparing you for the rest of the season.
1) When it's 90 degrees in the South, you should not be playing football.
As I sat in section 337 of Sanford Stadium this past Saturday, it occurred to me that maybe August is not the best month for football.
Of course all I had to do was watch. Georgia and Georgia Southern battled the heat, and each other on the field. UGA VII spent the third quarter in his air-conditioned dog house, sleeping. Can you blame him?
The cool autumn air is just around the corner. Hopefully it will arrive before Saturday's game.
2) Michigan should not open at home against a lesser opponent.
A new head coach, a packed house, a fired up team...the perfect recipe for....DISASTER?
Last year it was Appalachian State who went to the "Big House" and shocked the Nation. This year it was Utah...really? Utah?
Michigan did rebound last year, and I am sure they will most likely do the same this season...but Utah?
3) The polls REALLY don't mean much in preseason.
I am a Georgia fan, so this will be a biased thought...but if USC is THAT good, why not start them at number one? I find it hard to believe that if the situation had been reversed, and USC had beaten Cal Poly Tech Community College for Girls, Georgia would have jumped them in the polls.
I understand that USC looked real good, but so did Georgia. Georgia gave up two TD's in the fourth quarter playing fourth string defensive players...I know it's early...but it's still frustrating.
Maybe Coach Richt needs to run up the score a few times. Just a thought.
4) The ACC is not very good.
This could be a long season for my ACC friends. Is there a dominant team in this conference?
Virginia Tech goes down to East Carolina. USC destroys Virginia. Alabama manhandles Clemson. Ouch!! Bad start for what may be a bad conference.
Maybe Miami will restore order and upset the Gators. You think?
5) Rocky start for Rocky Top.
The SEC got off to a pretty good start this week. Of course Vol fans would not agree with that statement. UCLA gave their new head coach a great win, while the Vols stumbled on Coach Fulmer's birthday.
A good SEC team should not lose to a team that is starting their third string quarterback. The Vols are a good SEC team...aren't they?
I'm sure the Vols will rally, and salvage their season.
6) Georgia's schedule just got tougher!!
As if it wasn't already a tough schedule... Alabama looked strong against a Clemson team that was suppose to be pretty good. Vandy just started off week two with a win over South Carolina. Georgia Tech appears to be taking to Coach Paul Johnson's offense.
Sounds like just a few more reasons to drop Georgia in the upcoming poll. Don’t you think?
Ah, what the heck.. let's play the games anyway and then decide.
So there you have it, just a few things I learned in week one of the college football season.
We turn our attention to week two now....Central Michigan visits Georgia with their Tim Tebow replica QB and an upset on their mind. Can East Carolina pull another upset? Is Bowling Green really that good? Will Miami shock the Gators?
The answer to these questions and more are just hours away.
