Brett Favre selected a co-captain

Hot Stove New YorkSep 4, 2008

The New York Jets voted for and announced captains yesterday. The most notable name on the list was newly acquired Quarterback Brett Favre. The 38-year old quarterback has started an NFL-record 253 straight games going into the opener against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday. However, none of those starts came as a member of the Jets. Favre came to New York in a trade with the Green Bay Packers on August 6th. Even though he missed about a month of training camp the players trust his ability and are confident with his leadership qualities. The locker room atmosphere has been buzzing since the legendary quarterback has been with the franchise. Expectations are now high for a team that has not won a Superbowl in 40 years.

Last season Favre led the Packers to a 13-3 regular season and a NFC championship game appearance. He also also became the NFL all-time leader in touchdown passes (442) and passing yards (61,665). Farve turns 39 next month is looking to join Phil Simms as the only other quarterback to lead his team to the playoffs at that age.

Lavaraneus Coles and Jerricho Cotchery are proven wide receivers that should benefit with their new quarterback. Favre was 14-18 for 144 yards in the preseason and threw his first touchdown pass to rookie tight end Dustin Keller. His teammates admire his resume, yet describe him as approachable. His cannon right arm is looking to turn around a team that finished 4-12 a season ago.

The other offensive captain was another free agent acquisition this off-season, in guard Alan Faneca. Defensive end Shaun Ellis and safety Kerry Rhodes were selected captains on defense in the vote by the players. David Bowens and Leon Washington will be captains on the special team’s.
