Thiago Alves Vs John Howard
1 of 7
Winner: Alves by unanimous decision.
Great opening fight. Thiago looked like a completely different fighter compared to his last fight against Jon Fitch, which was a disaster. First round saw Thiago score a takedown early on. He threw a vicious leg kick that caught Howard on the left knee. Thiago hit a big knee to the face. Howard ended round 1 with a good flurry of punches but not enough.
Second round Thiago got another takedown. He had a great gameplan coming in, he wanted to improve his game and he looked really great here. When Howard was down, Thiago landed some good forearms to Howard's head.
Final round started slowly but Thiago landed a big right that knocked Howard down. He had a small opening where he could have finished it but Howard was able to get back up. Thiago landed more kicks. Howard tried to end it with a big flurry late but to no avail. Great fight, great performance by Thiago.
Joe Stevenson Vs Mac Danzig
2 of 7
Winner: Danzig by TKO in First Round
A knockout that literally came from nowhere. Danzig had just taken a big right hook to the head and Stevenson looked like he was finding something. Stevenson tried to come in with an attack and as Danzig is moving away from Stevenson he landed a perfect punch right to the jaw and Stevenson went down in a heap. The ref stopped it right there.
Definitely a surprise as this fight figured to be won on the ground by both men. First round wasn't much early, just both guys dancing around each other, trying to find an opening. Then you had the Stevenson right hook and the Danzig shot to the jaw. Danzig was like a man possessed after he scored the knockout too. He seemed as surprised as anyone that it happened.
Jim Miller Vs Charles Oliveira
3 of 7
Winner: Miller via submission (kneebar) in round 1.
Oliveira came out quick, landing headkicks. Miller got him against the cage and was able to take him down. It looked like Miller was in some trouble because Oliveira was so quick on the ground and his legs are so long that he was able to bring them and get him close to a triangle. Miller stood up and Oliveira started kicking. Miller was able to catch Oliveira's left leg and he had good position to lock in a kneebar. Oliveira was punching Miller in the body and that gave Miller even more leverage and he finally locked in the kneebar.
Oliveira has a lot of talent but he made a rookie mistake. He should have used his right leg to try and kick out of the submission. He didn't and it cost him. After the fight, Miller said he wanted a title fight.
Stefan Struve Vs Sean McCorkle
4 of 7
Winner: Struve via TKO in round 1.
It looked ugly early for Struve. McCorkle got a huge slam on Struve and was landing some good shots to the head. McCorkle had Struve's arm and locked him up in a kimura and it looked like the fight would end there. Struve was able to line his body up against the cage preventing McCorkle from putting more pressure on the arm. Struve fought out of the kimura.
With McCorkle on top and throwing punches, Struve was able to roll over and get position on top of McCorkle. From there he just started throwing punches and McCorkle had no answer for it. The ref had to stop it, Struve gets the win in round 1.
Welterweight Championship: Georges St-Pierre (c) Vs Josh Koscheck
5 of 7
Winner: GSP by unanimous decision. St-Pierre retains the UFC Welterweight championship.
Very good opening round. GSP landed a ton of jabs to Koscheck's face. GSP scored a takedown right away, Koscheck got right back up. GSP went for another takedown but Koscheck with good takedown defense. Koscheck scored a takedown late in round 1. Koscheck's right eye is swollen bad.
Second round Koscheck started very defensively. His right eye is nearly swollen shut. GSP continued to land hard combination shots. Koscheck was able to score a couple of good uppercuts on GSP, didn't appear to phase him though.
Third round and GSP is controlling every aspect of the fight. He just keeps landing jab after jab to Koscheck's face. The jabs combined with a number of hard kicks to the legs of Koscheck and GSP is dominating this fight. Doctor examines Koscheck's eye, it looks really bad. Fight continues to round four.
GSP is way too fast for Koscheck. GSP continues to land more hard shots to the face and the eye of Koscheck and Josh has no answer for it at all. GSP lands a stiff knee to the eye. Really, really nasty swelling.
Final round, GSP scores two takedowns and just keeps doing what he did the whole fight. He kept landing jab after jab, hook after hook. Koscheck's eye started to bleed. Very methodical and calculated fight by GSP. Credit to Koscheck for staying in all five rounds, but this fight was not close.
