Miami Hurricanes: Dave Wannstedt Leaves Pitt, Miami Don't Get Any Ideas.
Following a dissappointing 7-5 season where Pittsburgh was favored to win the Big East, Dave Wannstedt was fired—excuse me—resigned from the position of head coach.
Wannstedt will continue to work in Pitt's athletic department, however one has to wonder if another university in another city that he has ties to would be an enticing opportunity for him.
Wannstedt has deep ties to South Florida.
In 1986 he joined Jimmy Johnson's staff with the Hurricanes as their defensive coordinator where he won a National Championship in 1987.
He then followed Johnson to the Dallas and served as the Cowboys defensive coordinator before becoming head coach of the Chicago Bears in 1993.
However, after being fired by the Bears in 1998, he rejoined Johnson with the Miami Dolphins where he became the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, a position which he would serve for one year before being promoted to Head Coach.
Sadly, Wannstedt is mainly known for underachieving.
Prior to the 2002 NFL season, the Dolphins were favored by many to make it to the Super Bowl as the AFC representative.
Thanks to a 2-6 record on the road as well as some terrible coaching, the Dolphins finished 9-7 and out of the playoffs completely.
Had the 'Fins won just one of their last two games they would have won the AFC East.
Had they won both they would've clinched home field advantage in the playoffs.
Wannstedt was 42-31 with the Miami Dolphins with two playoff appearances in his time there.
He resigned in the middle of a turbulent 2004 season that saw the premature retirement of Ricky Williams and a 1-8 start.
At Pitt, Wannstedt has been known for underachieving as well.
His collegiate record was the same 42-31 that he compiled with the Miami Dolphins. The last two seasons the Panthers were favored to win the Big East, however both times they fell short.
Now, I know I'm starting this argument on my own as there have been no links of any kind to suggest that the University of Miami might hire Dave Wannstedt, however I'll still go out on a limb and say that Wannstedt isn't the man for the job.
In fact to many Wannstedt, who by all accounts is an honest and good man, isn't the man for any head coaching job in either the NCAA nor the NFL.
