Auburn QB Battle Continues On...and on...and on.
Tony Franklin said it all his life. He always knew that rotating quarterbacks wasn't a good idea, he told himself that it was a stupid idea and it just doesn't work. That was until this fall in his first year as offensive coordinator at Auburn.
Franklin saw too solid quarterbacks perform in the summer and the fall and thought that it could really work in this situation. Well one game and 85 yards passing later, Franklin has changed his tune.
Franklin is now faced with an unusual situation. He has one quarterback in sophomore Kodi Burns, that has played sparingly his freshman year, but had performed great in the spring and summer and was making his case to be the starting quarterback at Auburn. Burns brings the ability to run and make plays using his legs that defenses can't account for.
Then he has the quarterback that he helped recruit to Auburn, in junior college transfer Chris Todd. Franklin recruited Todd while Franklin was at Troy University and brought him in to run his spread offense thinking he would be a perfect fit since Todd had run the offense since his high school days.
Now here we are, after one game, and neither Burns nor Todd has yet to separate themselves as the clear cut starter at quarterback. Franklin is nearing the point where a decision of a starter has to be made for the continuity of the team and the future success that this team was expected to have.
Head coach Tommy Tuberville and Franklin had thought that a rotation of the two quarterbacks every series would be something that could work, but what they found out Saturday night against Louisiana-Monroe, was that rotating quarterbacks every series just doesn't work.
It doesn't create any rhythm or momentum for either quarterback, therefore creating no momentum for the offense as a whole.
Auburn won the game, and maybe playing Louisiana Monroe was a perfect first game for the Tigers. They were able to experiment with the rotating quarterbacks while still winning the game handily.
But time for experimenting is quickly coming to an end. The Tigers face a solid Southern Miss team this Saturday and if they don't come ready to play and have their passing game straightened out, it could be 2007 South Florida all over again.
Chris Todd will get the start this Saturday against the Golden Eagles, one reason being that Kodi Burns, who started against Louisiana-Monroe, suffered a nasty gash on his leg and required stitches and has been held out of practice the last two days.
The other reason being that Tuberville said he wanted to get them both a start in the first two games.
Either way, Tuberville and Franklin have a tough decision to make after this weekend. With a tough SEC schedule on the horizon, a starter at quarterback needs to be named, of course it wouldn't hurt if Chris Todd or Kodi Burns could step up and take the job from the other.
One thing is for certain though, if both play well again on Saturday, I wouldn't want to be the one making the decision on a starter. This looks like a battle that could go on all season, no matter who the starter is.
This drama will take another step on Saturday, but judging from the way things have gone so far, don't look for anything to be solved anytime soon.
