Julio Cesar Chavez Knocked Out with a Fever: Nonito Donaire in the Main Event
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was set to throw down with Alfonzo Gomez on December 4, 2010 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. However, less than a week ago, Gomez had to pull out of the bout, citing an injury.
An MRI conducted confirmed a torn ligament in Gomez' left elbow.
Julio Cesar Chavez remained on the main Event Card when Pawel Wolak (27-1-17), jumped at the opportunity to square off against Chavez.
"I dropped everything I was planning and said yes," Wolak said.
In September, Wolak was briefly considered as an opponent for Chavez when camps for Cotto and Chavez could not come to terms on a fight.
Arum who was optimistic at the time opted for Alfonzo Gomez to face Chavez.
Wait!
The Mexican novela doesn’t end there.
Chavez has now come down with the flu and has pulled out of his bout with Wolak.
After he woke with a 103 degree fever, Chavez' camp notified officials and the main event has now gone to Nonito Donaire.
Wolak has been downgraded to an undercard, where he’ll face the lesser-known Jose Pinzon (18-1-1).
Obviously, Wolak is very disappointed and feels there maybe something else going on, “I personally don't believe there's an illness…I believe he's having a weight problem and it's a tough fight for him. I think he's scared of the loss. To fight me, you have to come into that ring in tip-top shape. He obviously isn't," Wolak told reporters.
In the mean time the bright lights have shifted to Nonito Donaire as he tangles with Volodymyr Sydorenko (22-2-2, 7 KO).
Sydorenko is a former WBA champion and Donaire is a rising star out of the Philippines behind his countryman and pound for pound best Manny Pacquiao.
Currently Nonito is ranked No. 4 on the Ring Magazine pound for pound list.
While there have been some changes in the December 4, 2010 fight card, the fighters who remain have a lot to prove as some have been jilted and others launched into the limelight.
