The Eight Best Career Moments of Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP)

Cody DaltonDec 2, 2010

Through his short tenure in WWE, Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) has had a great run and a few great moments. Despite not winning the WWE Championship, his career in World Wrestling Entertainment has seen quite a few bright spots. This slide show will showcase just some of those many great moments that he had.

8) Wrestling's Hottest Free Agent

8) Hottest Free Agent

MVP's initial courtship to the WWE was an impact in itself. While WWE had run vignettes of upcoming Superstars who would be coming into their new product, MVP decided to go in a different route and call himself one of wrestling's biggest free agents. He first appeared on the August 4, 2006 episode of Smackdown.

7) The Debut

Who could forget the debut of MVP? He runs through a tunnel, which is similar to that of NFL teams, and wears one of the most unusual body suits. Who could forget the chants of "Power Ranger" as his match took place. He would defeat jobber Marty Garner in his No Mercy debut.

6) Losing Streak

For five months, lasting from August 29, 2008 and ending on January 16, 2009, MVP endured a long losing streak. Because of this streak, MVP was denied his "contract bonus" and perks such as his inflatable tunnel were gone. MVP lost to a variety of competitors before finally ending the streak by defeating the Big Show with help from Triple H in a Last Man Standing match. The feud turned MVP "face" and also gave Triple H a spot in the Royal Rumble match in 2009.

5) US Title Match wIth Kofi Kingston

After coming over to Raw as the United States Champion, MVP would hold on to the title for a couple more months. He would eventually lose the championship on June 1, 2009 in a classic match with Kofi Kingston. The two fought back and forth before Kingston countered a roll through by MVP for the win. The two shook hands after the match. It was one of MVP's classic matches in his career.

4) Feud with Kane

5 of 8

MVP asked for tougher competition following his match with Marty Garner at No Mercy and was immediately met with a challenge from the "Big Red Monster" Kane. The two would have a great feud over the next few months. MVP would get the best of Kane in two tough matches: a street fight and a steel cage match. However, it would be Kane that would end up getting the big win in the end, as he lit MVP's suit on fire during their Inferno Match at Armageddon 2006.

3) Feud with Chris Benoit

6 of 8

The man that MVP so beloved and even imitated, Chris Benoit, became one of his best feuds. The two feuded for months in 2007, as Benoit picked up victories at Wrestlemania 23 and Backlash 2007. You knew that he was on the cusp of his first championship win. MVP finally won his first championship at Judgement Day 2007 against Chris Benoit, as he won a two out of three falls match to claim the United States Championship.

2) Reign As United States Champion

7 of 8

For nearly a year (343 days), MVP was the holder of the United States Championship. It was the longest reign in the history of the WWE and currently the third longest reign ever in the history of the championship. He is only just behind Rick Rude's first reign in 1991-92 and Lex Luger's third reign in 1989-90. His total days as United States Champion (419) ranks fourth all-time behind Lex Luger (948), Ric Flair (626), and Blackjack Mulligan (498).

1) Feud with Matt Hardy

8 of 8

Following his hard fought feud with Benoit was an even more dramatic one with Matt Hardy. The two fought at Great American Bash, and MVP retained his championship. MVP would claim he was better than anyone else and was out to prove it.

However, he and Hardy would have many different competitions to prove his "betterness". Hardy would get the better of him in many of these competitions, including an arm wrestling competition and even getting knocked out by Evander Holyfield, Hardy's replacement in a boxing match, at Saturday Night's Main Event.

The two would eventually win the WWE Tag Team Championships together after MVP claimed he could win the belts with any partner because he was so good. While as his fellow tag team partner and champion, Hardy asked for a match with MVP for the United States Championship, but he refused while they were partners.

The unusual partnership came to an end on November 16, 2007, when the team lost their titles to The Miz and John Morrison in both a defense and a rematch immediately made by MVP. Following the second loss of winning the titles, MVP would attack Hardy and keep him out of action for a while. While MVP was having short feuds with Rey Mysterio and Ric Flair, his feud with Hardy reignited when Hardy cost MVP a shot at winning the Money in the Bank Ladder match at Wrestlemania 24.

Hardy finally conquered in the rivalry by winning the United States Championship from MVP at Backlash 2008.
