Nevada Wolfpack Capitalize on Boise State's Mistakes, End Broncos' BCS Hopes
Well, that was fun while it lasted. In the "year of the non-AQ" teams, another one drops. First, it was Utah (in stunning fashion), and now it's Boise State.
It took two missed field goals for the game to fall Nevada's way, but in the end, the Wolfpack dropped the Broncos 34-31 in OT at Mackay Stadium.
The game appeared to be over early, when Boise State outscored Nevada 21-7 in the second quarter to go up 24-7 at the half. Most people counted Nevada out, but they wouldn't have it.
The game went back and forth. By the time Nevada tied the game at 24, they let Kellen Moore throw a 74-yard TD pass to put the Broncos up, 31-24.
Nevada had time though, and marched down the field. Nevada's QB Colin Kaepernick connected with Rishard Matthews for a touchdown with just 13 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 31-all.
Overtime seemed certain. That is, until Nevada kicked the ball only 55 yards and allowed the Broncos to get to their own 37-yard line on the return. Still, with only six seconds on the clock, OT seemed inevitable.
Kellen Moore then rattled off a second miracle pass, this time 54 yards down the field to Titus Young. The clock stopped to move the chains and timeout was called. Boise State had the ball on Nevada's nine-yard line and and only needed to kick a field goal to win. With one second on the clock, the extra-point team took the field.
Boise State placekicker Kyle Brotzman couldn't get it done. He missed the field goal and sent the game into overtime.
Boise State got the first shot at the end zone, but Brotzman missed a second field goal and left Nevada the opportunity to take the game with a field goal of their own.
They did.
Nevada placekicker Anthony Martinez took the field and the kick sailed through the uprights.
The scoreboard read 34-31, Nevada on top. The victory marks Nevada's first win over the Broncos since Oct. 31, 1998.
This is a program-defining win for the Wolf Pack, and a loss that many in Idaho won't forget for a while.
Now it's up to TCU to make a move, as they're the last ones standing.
