Miami Heat: Why All the Panic? Reasons Heat Will Recover Before Playoffs

Stephen PattersonNov 23, 2010

The Miami Heat are off to a surprisingly slow 8-6 start in their first season with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. This slow start has caused every NBA fan on the planet to question whether or not the Heat are real title contenders this season.

While the Heat clearly have plenty of questions to address over the coming months, with one or two small moves, they will be just fine come playoff time.

The addition of Erick Dampier gives them a big body down low they have desperately needed to battle in the paint. While he hasn't been the best offensive player in the NBA during his career, he isn't afraid to crash the boards or give a hard foul down low when needed to enforce the paint.

The loss of Udonis Haslem will definitely hurt Miami, but the addition of Dampier softens that blow slightly. The pairing of the two might have solved the Heats' rebounding and post problems, but they will now need to find at least one more big man that can be a presence in the post and force on the boards over the next couple months.

The point guard spot is another position that needs to be addressed before the trade deadline if the Heat want to be title contenders this season. While LeBron has been content moving the ball and facilitating as if he were the teams PG so far this year, they still need an able fifth body on the court to play both sides of the balls at the same time.

Joel Anthony, Mario Chalmers, Carlos Arroyo and James Jones all need to play at a high level if they want to stay in Miami, as any of the four could find themselves being moved in a deal to upgrade the roster before the deadline. Pat Riley will likely make at least one move to upgrade the roster before then.

While everyone is worrying about the Big Three and their individual problems, they will be just fine late in the season when it actually counts for something. Miami just needs some of their role players to step up and get used to playing together before the playoffs.

The main thing people don't realize is that if this team is clicking on all cylinders in the postseason, it doesn't matter what seed they are as long as they make it to the playoffs in some form. With the talent they have, they don't have to land home-court advantage or anything else to win.

Their issues on the floor have plenty of time to be worked out before the playoffs; the only real issue I see the Heat having is the need for one or two small moves.

They need one more big player who can rebound, fight in the post and isn't afraid to get dirty, as well as a point guard who is somewhat consistent in at least one aspect of the game whether it be offensively, defensively or as a facilitator.

Beyond that, Miami will be just fine in the postseason. LeBron and D-Wade both know how to carry teams in the playoffs and in tough spots, and they have both shown that over their careers at points. Do people just think they forgot that talent and ability over the summer when they decided to play together?

While everyone is worried and/or upset that Miami has started off the season with an 8-6 record, just keep in mind that not one single person within that organization will care in June what their regular season record was as long as there is a new championship banner hanging in South Beach next year.
