NFL Head Scratchers From Week 11: Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

Jeff CockeyNov 22, 2010

A short list of ten things that made me scratch my head in amazement or would it be more accurately described as bewilderment. I am sure that you guys can add many more "things that make you go hmmm..." to this list and please send them to me in the comment section, but here are the ones that stuck out for me in week 11.

Not Having The Best Of Days Brad?

The Vikings fired Brad Childress this weekend. Is firing Chilly going to make Brett Favre any younger? Not to mention that Brad’s contract runs through 2013. So you are saying that you don’t want me to work for you anymore but I will be paid as if I still have a job for the next two and a half years? I don’t know about you guys but I think the Vikes owner Zygi Wilf is taking notes from our current administration when it comes to unemployment logic.

Speaking of Zygmunt, according to Wikipedia he was once quoted as saying, “Brad has done a tremendous job leading this football team and we value the positive environment he has created for the Minnesota Vikings on and off the field. He has continued to positively impact this team and create a strong foundation for future success." In my Minnesota to English dictionary under “future success” is a picture of The Donald - “You’re Fired.”

The Redskins. They themselves are head scratchers. Why did they have to win this week? And in overtime no less. Not only are they keeping me hanging on like that cat dangling from a tree limb on the front of those “Hang in There” greeting cards, but now they are doing it in exciting fashion making me believe that there is an actual reason why I should invest my time, heart and soul into this team.

Why Washington? WHY? I was so ready to give up on caring last season when the Detroit Lions beat the Skins to win their first game in seventy six years (If you read my column you know that I’m not good with numbers).

I’ve been pondering this one for awhile and many people disagree with me but why is Norv Turner still in San Diego? With the talent this guy has had on all of his San Diego teams, to not even make it to a Super Bowl is just silly. You give this team to Bill Cowher and they’d have won it twice already.

Norv can get them to the playoffs but then he dies off. It seems Norv needs a refresher course from Alec Baldwin’s classic character Blake in Glengarry Glen Ross. “A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing.” Norv is a team killer. Ask the Redskins. First Norv and now Dan Snyder. I should have named this column “Why the Redskins Make Me Cry,”

The Jets. This is a head scratcher. Are they good or are they lucky? Several of their wins were very close and this week, against the Texans, really? With less than two minutes to go Sanchez orchestrates an amazing drive to win the game with seconds left to play. Or did Houston just phone-in that last drive? I mean 99 out of 100 times Sanchez and the Jets go home from that game with their heads hung. J-E-T-S, LUCK, LUCK , LUCK...

The Patriots and Colts. Obviously Tom Brady’s hair but beyond that the Pats running back/receiver/everyman, Danny Woodhead. This kid makes me scratch my head every time I see him in an NFL uni. He’s amazing. I think he might legally be a dwarf. I’ll ask my friend Joe.

Either way, this lilliputian was cut from the J-E-T-S and four days later signed by the Skipper of the P-A-T-S. The Munchkin was an undrafted free agent out of Chadron State (don’t worry nobody knows where that is unless they looked it up. Chadron, Nebraska) and I dare say he is going to win his first Super Bowl this year.

Yeah, I said it. I’ll own it. Well, it certainly won’t be the Redskins that win it this year (read century). And the tears begin to flow once again.

What in the hell are the Buffalo Bills doing? Wait I know, they’re screwing next years draft pick. Although it’ll be tough to beat the Panthers to the bottom of the barrel. And what in the hell is Cinci doing? Anyone else think that they topped out with “Hard Knocks?”

The Raiders and the Steelers folks. Or should I just say the Steelers, ‘cause I don’t think any other team bothered to show up. Lets face it the Raiders needed a day off. They’ve been working really hard lately. Don’t want you guys to over extend yourselves. Might pull a hammy.

Number 1 Rated QB in The NFL

This one could have been applied to any of several past NFL weeks but why didn’t more teams go for Michael Vick when he was reinstated? In fact some specific teams came forth and openly declared that they had no interest in pursuing Vick. Why would you do that? Best player in the NFL right now. Good move other teams, real smart.

Hey Derek Jeter (it actually stung tremendously to even type that name) how about you give Eli Manning a call and teach him how to properly slide feet first. What was with his misguided Pete Rose imitation against the Eagles? A great heads up play to get a first down and you cap it off with a head first sliding fumble? What happened to feet first Eli. Feet first ends the play. The whistle blows. You don’t need to be touched to be down. Peyton, you will never be, my friend.
