Childress has been the subject of many headlines in a season that has been disappointing for Minnesota fans and players. Considered a Super Bowl contender this year after a trip to the 2009 NFC Championship, the Vikings fell to 3-7 yesterday in a lopsided loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Among headlines involving Childress this season have been stories of heated disagreements with quarterback Brett Favre and receiver Percy Harvin, unprofessional remarks about Favre during a press conference and his sudden waiving of Randy Moss just one month after the Vikings traded a third-round pick to acquire him.
Recent reports saw a number of players willing to comment to reporters that they were displeased with Childress as a coach, and numerous media polls showed overwhelming disdain among Vikings fans with the job he was doing as coach.
The firing of Childress comes just as speculation about Favre's future comes into heavy discussion. The 41-year-old quarterback stated after yesterday's loss that he was going to "re-evaluate" his future, causing speculation he might be considering leaving or benching himself before the end of the 2010 season.
