Sergio Martinez and the 15 Best Knockout Videos Ever
It was a rematch boxing fans were wanting.
Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams faced off again Saturday night in Atlantic City. Last year, the two engaged in a brutal slugfest, and Williams was awarded a majority decision. The results were way different, though, on Saturday, as Martinez dropped Williams with a brutal overhand left for a second round knockout.
Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) will likely now be considered among boxing's pound-for-pound best fighters, and win Knockout of the Year honors as well.
But where does it rank in boxing history? In a sport known for knockouts, can it hold up with boxing's legends?
Let the debate begin. Here's a look at 15 of the greatest knockouts in boxing history:
15. Brock's Bomb
1 of 15Former Olympian Calvin Brock had tremendous potential, and got his shot at the heavyweight title but could never get that decisive victory.
This knockout of Zuri Lawrence was one of the highlights in Brock's career.
14. Manny Drops Hatton
2 of 15Floyd Mayweather Jr. did the same, but we'll give the edge here to Manny Pacquiao, who didn't waste time beating Ricky Hatton with this second round knockout last year.
13. Rocky Marciano Beats Jersey Joe
3 of 15The two legendary heavyweights met for the first time in 1952, and Marciano prevailed with a brutal knockout in the 13th round.
Marciano finished his career 49-0 and is still the only heavyweight champ to retire undefeated.
12. Nonito's Upset
4 of 15You'll really enjoy this if you turn up the volume. Nonito Donaire pulled off a shocking upset in 2007 when he beat then undefeated Vic Darchinyan in a fifth round technical knockout.
Quick, brutal and extremely violent.
11. Through the Ropes
5 of 15Edison Miranda won Ring magazine's Knockout of the Year honors in 2008 when he dropped David Banks in the third round.
You have to love anytime someone gets sent through the ropes.
10. Sergio's Bomb
6 of 15No way Paul Williams would get back up after taking a punch like this.
Great punch, great knockout. Can't put it much higher, however. That bunch is reserved for boxing royalty.
9. Big George Beats Moorer
7 of 15No way the old man would win. No way.
Well George Foreman did exactly that, knocking out heavyweight champion Michael Moorer in the 10th round and becoming the oldest champion in heavyweight history at age 46.
8. The Rooster Punch
8 of 15Roy Jones Jr. crushed his share of no-name opponents, including Glen Kelly. And this was one of his more memorable knockouts, which he described as a "rooster" punch.
Jones grew up raising roosters in Florida.
7. Gatti Keeps Hammering
9 of 15The late Arturo Gatti wasn't one of boxing's most talented fighters, but he became one of the sport's most beloved for his relentless style. That reached its pinnacle with Gatti's trilogy against Micky Ward.
Long before that, however, came this epic fight with Gabriel Ruelas.
6. A Legend Is Born
10 of 151965. Lewiston, Maine.
A brash, loud-mouth new heavyweight champ named Muhammad Ali drops Sonny Liston in the first round of their rematch. The knockout also becomes one of the most famous sports photos in history.
5. One Of Many
11 of 15Take your pick of bums that were lined up. Back in the 1980s, Mike Tyson didn't waste time, but that's what made him known as "The Baddest Man On the Planet."
Here's his first round knockout of Marvis Frazier in 1986.
4. Rumble in the Jungle
12 of 15Some people thought Muhammad Ali would get killed when he stepped in the ring with George Foreman in 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire.
But Ali pulled off a historic upset and reclaimed the heavyweight title, knocking Foreman out in the eighth round of a fight known as "The Rumble in the Jungle."
3. Where Am I?
13 of 15Boxing fans will likely remember Kostya Tszyu for this knockout alone. What's even more hilarious is that Judah argues after with the ref about him stopping the fight.
2. Hagler and Hearns: Enough Said
14 of 15It's called the "Most Violent Nine Minutes in Boxing."
Watch and you'll see why. Two boxing legends faced off in 1985, and Marvelous Marvin Hagler beat Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns with a third round technical knockout to become the undisputed middleweight champion.
1. Speechless
15 of 15It won Fight of the Year honors and this won Round of the Year.
Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo squared off for the lightweight championship, and Corrales emerged with technical knockout victory in the 10th round.
Just watch....
Nothing tops this.
