Scumbag Antonio Margarito warrants the appreciation of fight fans

Colin LinneweberNov 17, 2010

Legendary pugilist Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao bludgeoned and battered Antonio “Tijuana Tornado” Margarito to earn a lopsided unanimous decision victory and capture the vacant WBC super welterweight title Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Despite sacrificing a glaring 17 pounds and nearly five inches in height, Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) violently thrashed Margarito (38-7-0-1, 27 KOs) and broke the Mexican cheater’s right eye socket.

Margarito had surgery Tuesday and was released from a hospital in “The Lone Star State” Thursday.

“I can’t believe that I beat someone this big and strong,” said Pacquiao, 31, the first boxer in history to win 10 world titles in eight different weight divisions. “It’s hard. I really do my best to win the fight.”

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, contended the 36-minute massacre should have been halted far earlier in the bout.

“We didn’t lose a round,” said Roach, 50, a native of Dedham. “I wish they would have stopped the fight.”

Prior to the bloodbath last week, a video surfaced from Margarito’s training camp that appeared to mock Roach and the Parkinson’s disease that causes his hands to tremble.

“It’s not easy to live with this every day,” said Roach. “A lot of people have Parkinson’s. We have to deal with it. They don’t.”

Margarito, who in May defeated Robert Garcia by unanimous decision in Aguascalientes, Mexico, had his boxing license justifiably revoked by the CSAC in February 2009 after he was snagged preparing to battle former WBA welterweight super champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley with a plaster-like substance inside his hand wraps.

Fortunately, Margarito was caught when officials at the Los Angeles Staples Center proved the devious Mexican was a cowardly charlatan before the match began and he had the opportunity to seriously injure Mosley (46-6, 39 KOs) with his cement fists.

Once Margarito had his illegal hand wraps removed, the “Tijuana Tornado” was promptly brutalized by Mosley and defeated by a ninth round TKO.

“All these people that say things about me don’t know me, don’t know my history,” claimed Margarito, 32, like the clown-pocket he absolutely is. “The way I box has always been clean. Nobody has a clear idea what happened that night.”

The “Tijuana Tornado” has sworn that he had no clue that his terminated trainer, Javier Capetillo, used forbidden substances in his wraps.

Margarito’s assertions are pathetic and he does not deserve to be exonerated strictly because he is an ignoramus.

Roach understandably scoffed at Margarito’s ludicrous alibi and he received permission to watch as the Mexican had his hands wrapped before the bout.

“I don’t trust those guys. He’ll do anything to win,” said Roach. “He’s done it before. He’s a cheater. I wrap guys every day. Believe me, if I put a rock in their hand, they would know it.”

After the “Tijuana Tornado” was rebuffed by Nevada and California, Margarito ultimately received his license in Texas to scrap Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs).

Margarito is the quintessential tough and rugged pugilist in the ring.

Nevertheless, his thwarted actions versus Mosley are a cardinal sin in boxing and they should never be forgiven under any circumstances.

“Boxing is considered a crazy and animalistic sport,” said Mike Cappiello, a native of Brockton who once battled for the IBO super featherweight title and retired with an impressive mark of 33-6. “Margarito’s actions further hurt the outlook of boxing.”

Cappiello, the owner of Cappiello Brothers Boxing gym in “The City of Champions,” continued.

“You need to keep boxing as safe as possible and make sure nothing serious happens to boxers. Margarito should have been suspended for more than a year to make a statement.”

Margarito is beloved by Mexican fight fans primarily for his brawling style and he was a popular attraction throughout much of the United States before his nefarious nature was unveiled.

Still, regardless of his ability to draw an audience, Margarito did not deserve a chance at redemption in any of our 50 states and he should have been permanently banned from prizefighting.

For the sport of boxing, exiling Margarito would have been a classic case of addition by subtraction.

Sadly, because money breeds evil and boxing is sinful, Margarito managed to weasel his way back into the squared circle for an extremely glamorous and lucrative contest against an all-time great boxer.

For proper retribution, Margarito needed to be tortured in a clean and succinct fashion.

Manny Pacquiao certainly accomplished vengeance and justice last weekend.

Still, despite his disgusting character, Margarito deserves kudos for the heart and perseverance he exhibited versus Pacquiao.

Most scrappers would have quit or sought an alternate way to skirt a further pounding.

Apparently, Margarito does not comprehend the notion of submitting and he proved his absolute valiance throughout this brutal defeat.

“There was no way I was going to quit,” said Margarito, 32. “I’m a Mexican, we fight until the end.”

Margarito should not have been allowed to fight again as a professional.

However, because he wasn’t “going to quit,” Antonio Margarito actually warrants the appreciation of fight fans.
