New York Rangers: Can They Keep Streak Going at Heritage Night at the Garden?

Nick PerriNov 17, 2010

Tonight, the New York Rangers will host an original six rival, the Boston Bruins. The Rangers and Bruins met earlier in the season, the Rangers winning the game 3-2 in Boston.

The Rangers will unveil their Heritage Alternate Jersey for the first time in a regular season game tonight.

The brand new jersey reads "New York" down the center, diagonally, and holds an "85th Anniversary" patch on the shoulder. But the best part of the jersey is arguably the numbers that are stitched onto the inside of the jersey. Each retired number in Rangers history owns a spot on the Jersey; very nice.

Some teams believe alternate jerseys are good luck. For instance, the Minnesota Wild began a win-streak last season while wearing their alternate jersey.

Maybe the same will happen for the Rangers.

The Rangers are bringing an impressive three-game win streak into tonight's showdown; which consists of overtime wins against the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins, and an impressive 8-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday afternoon.

Can the Rangers keep the win streak going against the Bruins?

Boston is coming off of a 3-0 shutout victory over the New Jersey Devils on Monday, and they currently sit in sixth place within the Eastern Conference.

The Bruins hold an extremely impressive road record of 6-1-0 on the season while the Rangers are 4-5-1 at home.

The Rangers are coming off of an exciting 3-2 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, and will take that momentum into tonight's big game.

Henrik Lundqvist is expected to start in goal for the Rangers, and Lundqvist is coming off of an impressive performance in Pittsburgh. Lundqvist saved 37-of-39 shots in the victory.

The Rangers top-line of Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov and Ryan Callahan is coming off of another strong performance in Pittsburgh, in which they scored two of the goals.

Expect them to continue as the top line.

Sean Avery and Erik Christensen created terrific chemistry on the fourth line in Pittsburgh and I'd expect those two will remain together for tonight's game.

The lineup has not yet been determined for the Rangers, so expect an update this afternoon if there are any changes.

So, can the Rangers keep the win streak going tonight?

Yes, they can.

How?

Easy. The Bruins are one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL thus far, so if the Rangers can continue to play a hard defensive, backchecking game, they should be able to hold off Boston's offense.

The Rangers offense will have to be terrific, though, as Boston holds first place for least goals allowed on the season (29).

If the Rangers can get a strong forecheck going early on, and get some quick shots on net, they may be able to score a few early goals.

Last time the Rangers played the Bruins, they got off to an early 2-0 lead. If they can do that again, but continue the offensive pressure throughout the game, they may be able to run away with the game in the first two periods.

The Rangers penalty kill may have to be perfect again for the Rangers, depending on how the officials call the game. The power play will have to play better, as the Rangers power play has dropped to number 18 in the league.

Expect the Rangers to begin the game with a few early hits, as they did in the victory against the Oilers on Sunday.

If the Rangers can at least mimic their performance from last time the two teams met, they should have no problem winning the game.
