Why the Mid-Majors Should Break From the BCS

Del KerbyNov 15, 2010

There has been a lot of discussion in regards to a need to revamp the current system used for determining a national champion in the FBS (formerly known as Division1).

How does a system become so dysfunctional that excludes at least 50 percent of the teams from ever becoming national champion?

The plight of the mid-major conferences has been well documented on this site as well as in the national media.  With the strangle hold placed on the BCS by the six automatic qualifying conferences and Notre Dame, the mid-majors are effectively locked out of a national championship game.

Here's my input on a possible solution with the result being a little closer to a true national champion being crowned in the FBS.

First, the mid-major conferences need to come together and develop a plausible playoff system that would be acceptable to all the member conferences.

This solution may include using the current second tier bowls for neutral game sites.

Then as a united body approach the NCAA with their solution and request that a new sub-division be created for the mid-major teams to compete in and vie for a national championship with equal status to the current FBS division.

I believe the mid-major fan base would strongly support this action, and the media interest and TV revenues generated could support such a structure.  There are already multiple mid-major sports networks operating and this would increase viewership as well, creating increased funding for the universities.

Second, once the new division is established, and the model proved to work, the much discussed Plus 1 game could be created.

This would pit the mid-major national champion against the BCS national champion.  The result would be the closest thing to crowning a true Division 1 National Champion.

This would be like the Super Bowl of college football versus the current popularity contest that is being used today.

Everyone talks about parity in athletics.  If this system were created, it would, I believe, open the door to bringing parity to the FBS.

There are many high school athletes who are ranked as "4 and 5 star" recruits that really never get on the football field.

With the mid-major programs now being able to play for a true national championship, many of these recruits may opt for a mid-major university.

Knowing that they would probably receive extensive playing time versus one of the "Big Boy" BCS schools where playing time would be limited probably to special teams and scout squads.

This may be just a pipe dream of an idea, but I think it is one that deserves consideration.

I believe the time has come for this discussion to occur and a change implemented in determining how to crown a true national champion.
