Big East Week 11 Report Card: UConn Gets a Stunner

Tom EdringtonNov 15, 2010

While Pittsburgh fans try and figure out what happened up at UConn last Thursday night, let's get right to the business at hand and pass out the grades for last week's Big East games.

UConn (5-4, 202) 30, Pittsburgh (5-4, 3-1) 28:

What a great game for national television. What a great call by Randy Edsall from his own 20 on fourth and one. What a great night by Jordan Todman. What a bite in the butt for mighty Pittsburgh. Mighty? No wonder everyone bad mouths the Big East. Pitt's 5-4 overall and no team in this conference deserves to be in a BCS game.

Give UConn a ton of credit. The offensive line was awesome, they took it to the Pitt defense. Really, really great viewing.

Grades:   UConn A+;  Pittsburgh D.

South Florida (6-3, 3-2) 24, Louisville (5-5, 2-3) 21, overtime:

Louisville has been a burial ground for the Bulls. No wins there until Saturday. If you saw this, then you saw Charlie Strong jumping around on the sidelines like a happy maniac when he made that second timeout call that cost Maikon Bonani a 52-yard game-winning field goal.

This game was a struggle for USF and it looked like doom until Strong decided that he was invincible with his decision-making and went for it on fourth-and-short in the overtime and watched his team get stuffed by USF.

Of course Bonani kicked a 37-yarder to win it and Strong had no timeouts to harass him with.

Karma.

Grades:   South Florida A, Louisville C-.

West Virginia (6-3, 2-2) 37, Cincinnati (3-6, 1-2) 10:

Cincinnati was never in this game. West Virginia's talent was on display from the start. Too much speed and playmaking by the Mountaineers' playmakers. This season has slipped into oblivion for the Bearcats while West Virginia is still in the hunt for the Big East.

Grades:   West Virginia A, Cincinnati D.

Syracuse (7-3, 4-2) 13, Rutgers (4-5, 1-3) 10:

What offense?  This will have Syracuse fans declaring the old adage: "there are no ugly wins." But 23 total points, yuck.

Still, the Orange will go bowling in December.

Grades:   Syracuse B, Rutgers D.

There you have it. See you on Thursday and we'll come up something to chow down on this weekend.
