Manny Pacquiao Getting Closer to Being Crowned as New Pay-Per-View King

Leo ReyesNov 15, 2010

With his convincing win over Antonio Margarito on Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will most likely stay much longer as Ring magazine's pound-for-pound king.

While enjoying his prolonged stay in Ring's pound-for-pound ranking, a new kingship awaits the Filipino boxing superstar.

Soon, Manny Pacquiao will find himself being crowned as the new pay-per-view king, if initial estimates of last Saturday's pay-per-view buys are confirmed.

Currently, Floyd Mayweather Jr. holds the record of pay-per-view king, as shown in the number of buys for fights before retiring and after fighting twice in his comeback bid.

It appears that pay-per view buys for the Pacquiao-Margarito fight could reach more than 1.4 million. This figure is about double than the Pacquiao-Clottey match and just a little more than the record set by  Mayweather and Shane Mosley's most recent fight.

The most pay-per-view buys recorded for a boxing match in the last 10 years was Oscar de la Hoya vs.  Mayweather in 2007, with 2.44 million.

If the initial estimate of per-per-view buys for Pacquiao-Margarito is correct, it confirms the drawing potential of Pacquiao in generating high pay-per-view buys for his fights.

In the just-concluded Pacquiao-Margarito fight, it is clear Pacquiao drew more subscriptions than Margarito.

In the meantime, speculations are high on who will Manny Pacquiao fight next.

Among Pacquiao's possible opponents are Mayweather, Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Marquez.
