UFC 122: 10 Best Moments From Germany

Adam WellsNov 14, 2010

UFC 122 was definitely not the most exciting or glamorous event that has ever aired. In fact, it was quite unremarkable. Nothing that happened really seemed to matter a whole lot and none of the fighters on the show really seem to have anything special.

However, this is not a completely negative show as there were some highlights that can be taken away from UFC 122.

So here are the 10 best moments from UFC 122 from Oberhausen, Germany.

The First Round Of Ludwig Vs. Osipczak

1 of 10

The first round of the Duane Ludwig and Nick Osipczak fight was quite entertaining and could have set the stage for an enjoyable evening of fights. Osipczak came out as the aggressor and was landing some big punches but couldn't get Ludwig finished.

It was a strong five minutes of fighting that would sadly give way to 10 minutes of complete mediocrity as both men were worn down. In fact, Osipczak was running, just trying to kill the final five minutes. In doing so, he allowed Ludwig to walk away with a split decision victory.

Krzysztof Soszynski's Performance

2 of 10

Krzysztof Soszynski was pretty impressive in his fight with Goran Reljic. He landed some solid strikes in the first round of the fight. Then in the third round, he had Reljic on the ground and was giving him some big shots on the ground.

All in all, it was a nice showing by Soszynski, and he was able to get the unanimous decision victory.

Kris McCray Vs.Carlos Eduardo Rocha

3 of 10

In a fight that wasn't a part of the main card, but was able to be added to the Spike television show because Sakara and Rivera had their fight scrapped due to an illness with Sakara, McCray and Rocha gave more in their two-and-a-half minutes than a lot of the other fighters gave in three full rounds.

There was action the whole time both men were on the ground, going back and forth to get a submission. In the end, Rocha was able to lock in a kneebar and got McCray to submit.

Karlos Vemola's Punching

4 of 10

Karlos Vemola could be moving up in the light heavyweight ranks. He is only 25 years old, has an 8-1 professional record and looked quite good in his light heavyweight debut against Seth Petruzelli.

Vemola knocked Petruzelli on his keister and then kept pounding away on him to get the referee to call for a stoppage and get Vemola his first victory in his first fight in his new weight class.

Dennis Siver Vs Andre Winner

5 of 10

This was more about Dennis Siver and being able to lock in that choke on Winner in the first round.

Andre Winner was hanging with Siver, but in the end, it was Siver who was able to lock in a rear naked choke and got Winner to tapout.

Krzystof Soszynski's Shorts

6 of 10

For those that didn't see the fight, Soszynski wore these white shorts cut to make them look like a cross between a pair of shorts and a Scottish Kilt.

Maybe it was just the event didn't have a lot that really stood out, but I was fascinated by the hybrid nature of the shorts.

BJ Penn Vs Matt Hughes III

7 of 10

It was clear, watching UFC 122, that the company thinks next weekend's UFC 123 Pay-Per-View will do better business by being built around Penn-Hughes III.

It would be hard to argue with them.

Their first two fights were really classic. In the first one, Penn came in and surprised almost everyone when he upset Matt Hughes with a submission. The second fight, in 2006, saw Hughes avenge his loss and take the victory via TKO.

This third fight will be interesting because both men really have to win it. For Penn, a win shows that his losses versus Frankie Edgar are not a pattern of something that has been exposed in him. For Hughes, a win shows that his age isn't catching up to him and he can remain a viable contender in the Welterweight division.

Bruce Buffer

8 of 10

God Bless Bruce Buffer. Some may not like him, but I love him.

He can make the most mundane seem critically important. When watching his introductions for UFC 122, you could see that he will always bring that with him no matter what. He will step into his announcement like he is saying his last words ever.

He made the fights and the fighters seem better and bigger than they actually were.

Yushin Okami Wins

9 of 10

Yushin Okami defeated Nate Marquardt in the main event of UFC 122 and gets the shot at the winner of Vitor Belfort-Anderson Silva.

The fight wasn't particularly impressive as Okami was being the aggressor and taking the fight to Marquardt, who was obviously looking to land a punch that wasn't meant to be. So Okami was able to score a unanimous victory over Marquardt and now he gets a title match.

Watching this fight and knowing the talents of Silva, or even Belfort for that matter, I would just say...Good Luck, Yushin.

Joe Rogan's Line Provides The Line Of The Year

10 of 10

I don't think Joe Rogan gets the credit he deserves for the job that he does and how funny he really is. He was great on the television show "Newsradio" when it aired in the mid-90's. He has made a successful career as a stand-up comedian and a UFC color commentator.

At UFC 122, he provided the best line of commentary I have heard this year. To set up the situation, during the Reljic-Soszynski fight, the two men get locked up against the cage. Soszynski begins to dig his hand into Reljic's "crack." Rogan, without missing a beat, hears the audience reacting uncomfortably to that and  says:

"The crowd is reacting to that oil check."

I howled with laughter at that one.
