Manny Pacquiao: Projecting His 10 Next Moves After Win Over Antonio Margarito
Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito have yet to square off, but we're going to go ahead and project Pacman's 10 next moves after he wins.
At the top of the boxing world, Pacman will have any number of options at his disposal in the event that he does indeed beat Margarito. Most of them involve future matches, but there's more to his life than boxing at the moment as well. And we have to take that into account as well.
So with that little nugget in mind, here are the top 10 possibilities for Manny Pacquiao's future.
10. Another Album
1 of 10
I'm going to start this list off with a shrug-worthy "Why the hell not?" suggestion.
Thus, why the hell not?
Pacman is definitely quite the singer. He's released two studio albums, starred in four music videos and has had dealings with three different record companies in the past.
So maybe the first thing he'll want to do after tomorrow's fight is take a break to crank out some music. Just throwing it out there.
If he does, I really hope that he and Will Ferrell record a proper duet version of "Imagine."
9. Stars in a Sylvester Stallone Movie
2 of 10
How about another entertainment possibility?
This has been an intriguing notion for close to two years now, and I think the possibility of Pacman and Rambo teaming up together on the big screen is real enough to talk about with some level of seriousness.
Stallone had a couple of personalities from the fighting world in The Expendables in the form of Randy Couture and Steve Austin and his legendary role as Rocky Balboa certainly lends legitimacy to his interest in having boxing's biggest star in one of his movies.
Stallone is currently working on a sequel to The Expendables. Maybe there's a role in there for Pacman.
8. A Rematch With Margarito
3 of 10
Okay, enough silliness. Let's get serious.
I don't think Pacman will lose to Margarito, and like many, I think it will be a knockout.
But would that be the last of Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito?
Well, perhaps a rematch wouldn't be the worst idea for Pacman's camp, especially if this fight makes as many barrels of money as it's expected to.
Another fight would be a safe option for Pacquiao, seeing as how he's probably going to show he's clearly the better fighter and it would undoubtedly be yet another big ticket.
7. A Trilogy With Juan Manuel Marquez
4 of 10
Pacquiao and Marquez have already produced two great fights, so why not make it a trilogy?
Well, the biggest hangup would probably be the fact that Pacman's camp seems to be rather picky with who he fights these days and that they've shown they'd rather pit him against new opponents.
In short, they'd probably much rather have him fight Mayweather or somebody else than to have him try and complete a hat trick against the 37-year-old Marquez.
6. Another Fight With Miguel Cotto
5 of 10
If Manny Pacquiao is to fight again after tomorrow night's bout, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has said that he could be ready to fight again as early as March of 2011.
Well, that tells us when. But against who?
Well, according to Fanhouse, Miguel Cotto is interested in a rematch with Pacman. Pacquiao beat vim via a TKO in November of 2009 to win the Welterweight World Title.
But I for one am not so sure, mainly because I just don't see why Pacquiao's camp would want a rematch for any other reason than a dollar sign.
5. A Fight with Paul Williams
6 of 10
If Paul Williams beats Sergio Martinez again, however, then how long will it take for boxing fans start calling for a match between Pacman and the new Middleweight champ?
It probably wouldn't take long, as there are plenty of people out there who already want to see it.
But choosing Williams as Pacquiao's next challenge would be a huge risk. It's one thing to pit him against the 5'11" Margarito and his 72" reach.
It would be another thing entirely for them to put him up against the 6'1" Williams and his 82" reach.
4. A Fight with Sergio Martinez
7 of 10
Williams vs. Martinez II is November's other marquee boxing match, in which the Middleweight Title will be on the line. And what could come afterward if Martinez gets his revenge on Williams just might include Manny Pacquiao's name.
Finally.
Boxing fans have been pulling for this match for close to two years now, and maybe Pacman's camp will make the call if they can't figure out a fight with Mayweather.
Besides, at 5'10" with a 76" reach, he won't physically outmatch Pacquiao as much as Williams would.
3. A Fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
8 of 10
In a recent interview with Fanhouse, Pacquiao hinted that he is still very much interested in a fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
"I hope that it happens," he said. "It would be a nice gift to the fans."
It sure would, Manny. And it would also be a pretty nice gift for Mayweather as well, who's been chomping at the bit for a shot at Pacquiao for quite a while now.
This is what everybody wants to happen, of course, but I'm keeping it off the top of this list because of the negotiation troubles in the past. That and Mayweather's legal troubles, of course.
That being said, this is the match that makes the most sense.
2. Retirement
9 of 10
This is the big issue, is it not? And whether or not all the retirement talk is merely a ploy to sell tickets, we definitely have to consider it a serious possibility.
First off, Freddie Roach has come out and stated publicly that Pacman should consider retirement due to his age, political career and lack of worthy opponents.
Bob Arum disagrees, saying that Roach has no input on Pacquiao's future plans. But of course he would say that; Pacman makes him a lot of money.
Regardless, Pacquiao has plenty of reasons to hang 'em up after Saturday night, especially if he beats Margarito as expected. It's not like he's not going to have another job to fall back on.
1. Full-Time Politics
10 of 10
And that last slide naturally brings us to future move number one.
Pacquiao was officially proclaimed congressman of the lone district of Sarangani in May of this year and some will tell you that he cares more about politics than he does about boxing.
That may have something to do with Freddie Roach's revelation a couple weeks ago that his fighter misses his "job."
And if you were to ask Roach, it's already a foregone conclusion that Pacman will turn to politics full time after the fight with Margarito.
"We are going to lose Manny Pacquiao to politics, for sure," he said.
Well, at least in the short term, he's probably right.
