Cam Newton: Kenny Rogers and Bill Bell Lying? You Decide

Deric WinslettNov 12, 2010

The following are a few points that I have dissected, to expose what I believe are lies that smack in the face of justice and the truth. I will not rehash the entire Cam Newton story in this article; God knows that has been overdone.

Allow me to pose two questions; If Cam Newton went to MSU, would we have heard about any of this pay for play gossip? Secondly, if you believe the accusations coming from MSU, two of their coaches and three former players, why would MSU continue to vigorously recruit Cam Newton right up to national signing day, even after he verbally committed to Auburn?

Were they afraid that Auburn was aware that it was MSU actually trying to pay Newton to sign? Was it the MSU folks that wanted to report this first with a different spin, out of fear that Cam, his father, or Auburn would talk? I pose the questions, you decide. Isn’t that the trend of ESPN and others reporting this speculative story?

I want to make my intentions clear. I am here to relay what I believe are holes beginning to develop in the stories of Kenny Roger, John Bond, and now the newest accuser on the block, Bill Bell.  All three were former team mates during the '80s at Mississippi State.  All three have been reported to have had direct contact with Cam, and his father Cecil Newton, as well as supposed phone conversations.

Last Friday Ian Fitzsimmons a friend of Kenny Rogers conducted an interview with Rogers on ESPN radio in Dallas, TX. During the interview Kenny Rogers vehemently denied having represented the Newtons to MSU or any other school for money.  He stated that he was surprised to hear about this accusation when the story broke last week.

Asked if he had spoken to John Bond, he claimed he had not spoken with John in over 20 years.  He went on to deny any kind of interaction with anyone at Miss State for money on behalf of the Newtons

However, Thursday he once again interviewed on ESPN radio in Dallas.  He completely changed his story, and claimed that Friday November 27, the night before the MSU’s game with Ole Miss. At the Hilton Garden Inn,(Starkville) he witnessed Newton's father telling two Mississippi State football coaches that it would take something more to get Cam to sign. When asked in the interview did Mr. Newton ask for money.

He said, "I can't really remember how Mr. Newton stated this, but however he said it, one of the coaches was like, 'No, no, I don't want to hear that. No, no, don't hear that' as if money was brought up or it was going to take money to get him. I can't really remember, so I'm not going to sit here and say I remember what was said."

It should raise a red flag that Rogers can recall dates, where they met, who was there, but can’t actually remember how Mr. Newton asked for the money. Very strange he can’t recall the most important detail of his story.  Rogers also claims that he once again met with Cam and Cecil Newton the following Sunday on Highway 82 near Starkville at a Shell gas station. He claims Mr. Newton asked the following:

Cecil Newton: "What are you thinking? What are you thinking is going to happen? Is it going to go through?”

Kenny Rogers: "I said, 'Well, I can't answer that, I'll just call Bill Bell.' So I called Bill, and Bill didn't answer, and I left Bill a message saying, 'I'm with Mr. Newton and he just wants to know if the deal is going to go through.'”

Rogers was asked why he made the phone call. “I don’t have that kind of money, you want to help someone out, so I called someone who’s a good friend, someone I’m close too, I called Bill Bell.

Remember, this point is important: Rogers stated that he then called Bill Bell. Quote: “I'll just call Bill Bell.' So I called Bill. ”Bell told ESPN.com Thursday night that Newton's father, Cecil Newton Sr., did ask for money in exchange for signing. Bell stated that he received a phone call from Cecil Newton."

Ok I’m confused; Bell said he received a phone call from Newton, but Rogers claims he was the one who called Bill Bell and left a message. Can’t these guys’s keep their lies straight?  Another point should be clear here.

Mr. Rogers has made the FBI’s case easier. He has now stated that he made phone calls trying to solicit money or from Bell. Forget the NCAA, that’s a federal offense. Rogers just admitted on a radio show, he broke the law. Not only is this man a criminal, his credibility is nonexistent. He changes his story; last Friday he had no contact, to now he did have contact.  Which is it Mr. Rogers, what will be your story next week?

You draw your own conclusion, but the issue of this man, Kenny Rogers is the biggest factor here, and the fact that Bill Bell, and Rogers are saying two completely different stories when it comes to who called who.  The devil is in the details and the devil is Mr. Rogers. A warning to the kids, stay far away from Mr. Rogers’s neighborhood.
