Cam Newton: Other Coaches Are Speaking Out About Newton's Recruitment

Deric WinslettNov 11, 2010

Southern California head coach Lane Kiffin stated today that he and his staff recruited Cam Newton in Tennessee. “We recruited Cam. He nor his father, or anyone ever requested money or extra benefits during the recruiting process,” said Kiffin.

“We ultimately did not offer Cam a scholarship because he did not fit into what we were trying to do there at the time.” Kiffin was head coach for the Tennessee Vols for one season before leaving for USC.

Kiffin is the second major coach to speak out in as many days. In a Tuesday press conference reported by USA Today, Stoops said that he “didn’t notice anything and none of our coaches did as we were recruiting him.”

Oklahoma was reportedly among Newton’s top-three choices coming out of the JUCO ranks, along with Mississippi State and Auburn. Additionally, Stoops mentioned that he saw “nothing at all” out of the ordinary while recruiting Newton and that the whole process “could not have been better.”

The focus is seemingly turning back toward Mississippi State.  Yesterday MSU released a prepared statement defending their timing of released information to the SEC and NCAA.  Mississippi State said it forwarded its recruiting information on Cam Newton to the SEC office in January, but waited at least six months before fulfilling a request from the league office for more information.

ESPN reports that people "who recruit for Mississippi State" were its sources. When asked on Wednesday, Coach Dan Mullen said the only people who recruit for Mississippi State are the coaches.

So does this mean that it was Mullen's coaches that have spoken to the media behind the scenes?  Or are there non-coaches recruiting on behalf of MSU, which is against the NCAA bylaws. Either way, it looks as though MSU’s lies are beginning to box them in.  The truth is not far from the red hands of the Mississippi State campus.
