Roman Pavlyuchenko: The Man to Get Tottenham Back Into Gear?

josh rhysAug 26, 2008

Just two weeks into the English Premiership campaign, and already Tottenham find themselves in the bottom half of the table. Successive 2-1 losses at the hands of Middlesborough and Sunderland have dampened the usual high spirits and expectations of the many supporters who believed the team were on a quest to break into the "Big Four".

There's no doubt that the problem at the moment is not about skill, rather it is the team chemistry which has had so little time to develop since the squad has been put together.

Tottenham were one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League this preseason, and there is no doubt players are finding it tough to find form at a new club and with new team mates.

The problem this year has been (for once) their attack, with Darren Bent sitting alone up front. Ramos' decision to keep Berbatov on the bench has been heavily debated, and while the club are seeking to punish the rogue striker they are effectively punishing themselves by not having attacking options on the pitch.

As well as this, Tottenham have not been used to playing in a 4-5-1 formation and tactics have been revamped since last season, again causing disruptions to team chemistry.

The recent news that Roman Pavlyuchenko has agreed to sign with Spurs is almost certainly the good news Tottenham Hotspur fans have been waiting for, especially with the imminent departure of Berbatov.

It is hoped that this new attacking flare can provide the much needed boost to Tottenham's poor goal scoring problems experienced in these first two weeks, of course when both your strikers who bagged 23 goals a piece last season depart there is sure to be problems filling the void.

I believe Pavlyuchenko can bring the much needed hope to Tottenham, just as Dimitar Berbatov brought when he came to the club back in 2005.

As Tottenham look forward to the Chelsea match this weekend, one wonders whether Pavlyuchenko will be in their ranks for the London fixture—as there is more than just three points at stake in such a match.

My Recommended Lineup:

Goalkeeper: Gomes

Defence: Hutton, King, Woodgate, Assou-Ekotto

Midfield: Bentley, Jenas, Modric, Bale

Forwards: Pavlyuchenko, dos Santos
