Spain's Gavi Says Argentina Players Shouldn't Be Punished for Fight in Video After World Cup Final

Spain midfielder Gavi advocated against FIFA taking retrospective action toward any Argentina players based on what unfolded following the 2026 World Cup final.

The Barcelona star argued Leandro Paredes and others should avoid any suspension.

"I realize it doesn't set a good example for the children, but there's also that side to football that's a bit more violent," he said, per ESPN's Adriana Garcia. "Perhaps the most logical thing, in my view, would be to send him off during the match and leave it at that, but as I say, at the end of the day I think it's all part of football and that's just the way it has to be."

After the referee blew the final whistle on Spain's 1-0 victory, Paredes confronted Eric García and placed his hand around García's throat. Gavi came to his teammates defense and was shoved down.

FIFA confirmed Monday it formally opened an inquiry into the situation.

"Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents," the organization said.

"Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor's report has been completed."

Paredes isn't the only Argentina player potentially under the microscope. Videos purportedly show Nahuel Molina striking both García and Golden Ball winner Rodri.
