Colt McCoy: Is He The Best Rookie Quarterback in the NFL?
With the Cleveland Browns 34-14 total dismantling of the NFL-best New England Patriots Sunday afternoon the talk of the country right now, you have to begin to wonder if the Cleveland Browns finally found their franchise quarterback in former Texas Longhorn standout, Colt McCoy.
Considering that McCoy has shown above-average accuracy, uncanny mobility and a real winner-like attitude, Could Colt McCoy be the best rookie quarterback in the NFL?
And while we are now into the second half of the NFL season, somehow it only seems fitting that McCoy would be battling his old collegiate rival from Oklahoma, St Louis Rams rookie quarterback, Sam Bradford for that honor.
Sam Bradford leads all rookie quarterbacks in passing yards with 1,674, McCoy is second with 529 yards passing. Bradford also leads all rookie quarterbacks with 11 touchdown passes to only McCoy's one touchdown.
McCoy is first in completion percentage, completing 67.6 percent of his passes and also first among rookie quarterbacks with a 83.5 passer rating, while Bradford is second at 75.9.
McCoy is first in yards per attempt with 7.8, while Bradford is second at 5.8 yards per attempt.
Bradford is first in yards per game passing at 209.2 while McCoy is second at 176.3
And while Bradford has started every game for the St Louis Rams and has a 4-4 record as a starter, McCoy is 2-1 in his first three starts and has faced three teams with a combined record of 16-7 record in Pittsburgh, New Orleans and the New England Patriots with two of those teams being the last two Super Bowl Champions in Pittsburgh and New Orleans.
Bradford's opponents have a combined winning record of 32-38 and a winning percentage of .457
It is without question, that McCoy plays in the toughest division in the NFL in the brutal and harsh, AFC North, where weather can dictate strategy while Bradford plays in the much-weaker and softer NFC West and inside the confines of a dome.
Before Cleveland went into the 2010 NFL Draft, the Browns were one of the teams they were strongly considering trading up for the rights to the former Heisman Trophy winner, Holmgren wisely decided against it and decided to take Colt McCoy, the winningest quarterback in NCAA history in the third round.
I have to say that Holmgren not only made the right decision, but wait till 2011, when the Browns get running back, Montario Hardesty back from injury and give McCoy more weapons at play making positions. Only then can we come back to the question as to who is the better quarterback between Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford.
But make no mistake, both Cleveland and St Louis have greatly benefited from the two old Red River Shootout rivals.
