Pacquiao vs.Margarito: With the Win, Is He Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter Ever?
After demolishing Antonio Margarito in front of over 40,000 people at the Cowboys Stadium, Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao will most likely remain as the reigning pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
But is he the best pound-for-pound fighter ever?
Since the creation of pound-for-pound title by the prestigious Ring Magazine, Manny Pacquiao has become one of the few boxers on record who held on to the title of pound-for-pound king for quite a long time.
Pacquiao became Ring's best pound-for-pound fighter in 2007 and he held on to the title until he disposed Margarito via unanimous decision Saturday at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
With the win over the giant Mexican boxer in the junior middleweight division, Pacquiao becomes the first professional boxer in history to achieve such an incredible feat and hard-fought accomplishment.
Pacquiao, who started his career in boxing at the young age of 16, fought in eight different divisions, starting out as a flyweight with a win over fellow Filipino boxer Edmund Ignacio in 1995.
The Filipino boxing icon stayed on as a flyweight, winning over more than 20 boxers before moving up to bantamweight division where he held the WBC bantamweight and super bantamweight for almost five years.
In 2004, Pacquiao moved up to the featherweight division and later to lightweight, welterweight and finally to junior middleweight.
A closer look at the current pound-for-pound rankings would show there is no one in the current top-10 ranking that could pose a challenge to his title.
Next to Mayweather in the pound-for-pound ranking is Juan Manuel Marquez who was recently defeated by Floyd Mayweather. Marquez would need a series of victories to be deserving of the top post.
Down the line, comes Nonito Donaire and Paul Williams who are both wanting in solid accomplishments to be considered for the top position.
Considering Pacquiao's high-profile accomplishments in sports which include the Boxing Writers Association of America (BAWAA) Best Fighter Award, Hall of Fame recognition, Time Magazine's Most Influential Person Award, Forbes Richest Sportsmen List, etc., there is little doubt, he will remain in the pound-for-pound top post for the next months or even years.
With his win over Antonio Margarito, Pacquiao hopes to face undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. who is ranked second as Ring's Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters.
But even if Mayweather fails to face Pacquiao for the dream fight the world awaits and with Pacquiao's solid accomplishments in the sport, there is no doubt the neophyte legislator will be remembered as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer ever.
