Manny Pacquiao: Top 10 Things We Learned From "60 Minutes" Interview
Manny Pacquiao was featured on tonight's episode of "60 Minutes." It was a segment that was part biography part hype machine for this week's upcoming fight.ย
As many boxing fans are already aware, Pacquiao takes to the ring this Saturday in Dallas against Antonio Margarito. The segment did well to shine a light on the effect Manny Pacquiao has had on his fellow countrymen as well as the boxing world.
Here are some things I found interesting about the "60 minutes" piece.ย
10. The De La Hoya Fight
1 of 10The "60 Minutes" piece which I have posted here leads with footage of the Oscar De La Hoya fight. It was aย reminderย of how good Pacquiao looks against other great fighters.ย
I remember that Manny beat up on a boxing legend. Going into the fight, it was assumed that De la Hoya was past his prime and would be slower.
We did not realize how much of a chasm there was between fighters. Speed, defense, power, it was all on Pacquiao's side of the ring. The diminutive pugilist had arrived.ย
9. Philippines Captivated
2 of 10
One aspect that shocked me from the beginning was the fact that crime goes down in Pacquiao's native Philippines when he is fighting.ย
It seems that cops and thieves alike are all mesmerized by the country's favorite son.ย
8. Icon Status
3 of 10
Manny Pacquiao is bigger than any of us could imagine in his home country. His image and name are ubiquitous.ย
"60 Minutes" informed us that not only does he have a pool hall named after him but an entire shopping center as well.ย
7. Statesman
4 of 10
The most startling for some casual Pacquiao observers is that he is a full fledgedย congressman in his home country of the Philippines. It was not enough to give to his country in the form of image and money, Manny demanded he be more hands on.ย
This summer he was sworn in to his country'sย congress. While it has gone a long way to further cement his status as his country's most beloved, it may adversely affect his other endeavours.ย
6. Accomplished It All
5 of 10
This revelation came at the 2:36 mark in the video. Manny Pacquiao revealed that he has already accomplished all he has ever wanted to in the ring. For boxing fans, this comes as grave news.ย
Pacquiao is a committed individual. If he is indeed enthralled with civic duty, the fight on Saturday could be one of his last.ย
5. Done in Boxing?
6 of 10
If he has indeed accomplished all he has ever wanted to in the boxing world, then he does not put much weight into a possible matchup with Floyd Mayweather Jr.ย
The Mayweather camp should heed this news seriously. If Floyd has ever been interested in one of the biggest pay days in all of boxing history, he better get on the phone. It seems that Pac Man has no qualms walking away from boxing's limelight. If he does,ย Mayweather will miss out on millions.ย
4. Pacquiao Distracted
7 of 10
The segment highlighted news that has come from Manny's training camp. Pac Man has been distracted. This has been one of his worst camps, and it is all due to the fact that he splits his concentration between politics and boxing.
If Pacquiao is upset on Saturday, it is clear that he cannot serve two masters. One of his passions must take a back seat.ย
3. Freddie Roach Worried
8 of 10
Freddie Roach is losing sleep on this fight. He has noticed a drop off in Pacquiao's concentration, and it has him thinking upset.ย
Roach relayed that he thinks it is very possible for Manny to lose this fight.ย
2. President Pacquiao
9 of 10
When asked about his aspirations to become president of his home country, Pacquiao side stepped the question like a true politician.ย
What is clear is that Pacquiao is one of the most driven man in sports. If his new passion is politics, I see no end game before he is voted in as president.ย
1. Greatest
10 of 10
Pacquiao is arguably one of the greatest boxers in the last decade. Whether or not you have him in the discussion of greatest of all-time is inconsequential.ย
What is clear is that Manny has himself pegged in the one spot. This is a characteristic of someone who truly believes he has nothing left to prove in the sport. I would say that Pac Man is ready to pack his bags and leave the boxing world. I do hope I am wrong though.ย
