Allan Green vs. Glen Johnson: Round-By-Round Results and Analysis

Nick TylwalkNov 6, 2010

Big time boxing is back! The MGM Grand in Las Vegas is the site for tonight's Showtime telecast, as we get set to take in a doubleheader headlined by Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rafael Marquez.

First up, though, is the continuation of the Super Six World Boxing Classic. It's a clash of two men called in as substitutes, Allan Green and Glen Johnson. There's plenty at stake as the winner will move on to the tournament semifinals.

Steve Farhood, Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver are on hand to call the action. They discuss Green's chance for redemption after a poor showing against Andre Ward and Johnson's rare stroke of good luck in getting the call to replace Mikkel Kessler in the Super Six.

A video package takes us into the friendship between Green and Johnson. They know each other well and have sparred together in the past, but they need to set that aside tonight.

Jimmy Lennon Jr. is in the ring to bring the fighters to the ring. Johnson heads out first to the sounds of reggae music. He is 50-14-2 and has fought some big names like Roy Jones and Tarver in the past. This is Johnson's first fight at 168 pounds in around a decade, spending most of the last ten years at light heavyweight.

Green is 29-2 with 20 KOs. The tale of the tape shows that Green is four inches taller as well as ten years younger. The two men have basically the same weight and reach.

Robert Byrd is the referee in charge of the action. Lennon does the official introductions and we are all set for a scheduled 12 rounds of boxing.

Round One

Both men look willing to throw. Green is jabbing as Johnson looks to the body. Glen keeps a tight guard to deflect jabs. Nice right hand upstairs by Johnson, then another one right on the button. Green doesn't look hurt but he does look a little taken aback. Glen is certainly not getting cheated right now. Another thumping right by Johnson as Green tries to counter.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Johnson

Round Two

Green looks like he wants to pick up the pace a bit. Johnson ducks under and jabs the body. He backs Allan up and is quickly tied up. Quick left hook by Green on the inside. He dodges a few wild punches and avoids getting cornered. Green tries a flurry that is mostly blocked. Now he sneaks in a one-two to the head. Green ties up again to prevent Johnson from bullying him. Glen measures a right, and there's some more wrestling before the bell.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Green

Round Three

Lucian Bute is an interested spectator in the crowd. Green comes out firing jabs. Byrd has to step in to separate the two men. They try to work themselves free on the inside. Johnson follows his foe across the ring and continues to throw. One-two to the head by Green. Now a big right uppercut on the button by Green. Both men get some work done, but Johnson gets the better of it, battering Green in the final 10 seconds. Allan looks wobbly and probably lost that round at the end.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Johnson

Round Four

Green seems to be on his bike a bit. Johnson tries to rough him up at close range. Green jabs and backpedals. Glen bulls his way in and backs Green into the ropes. Johnson is loving the range right now. Green finally gets some breathing room and lets his hands go in combination. Byrd warns Green for holding and tells both men to get their punches up.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Johnson

Round Five

More of the same with Johnson wanting to get in close. He pops a right hand as Green backs up. Allan attempts to get the combo punching going again. Byrd is being kept busy. Pretty even action over the final 60 seconds, but Johnson gets the last good shot in.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Johnson

Round Six

Green is doing better now at hitting and moving away. Johnson seems to be doing his fair share of holding as well. Left hook by Green and he sneaks in a right hand too. Glen concentrates on the body and seems to be doing some damage. Johnson connects with another right hand that gets a reaction from the crowd. He's mugging Allan on the inside as the round ends.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Johnson

Round Seven

The first minute goes in Green's favor again, but he's yet to prove he can do this for three minutes. He bounces a right and left off Green's head, but Allan is standing his ground better right now. Green actually does some work on the inside. Johnson lands a solid power shot and Green answers him with a quick combination. Both guys are going to the body at the bell.

Tylwalk: 10-9 Green

Round Eight

Green comes out throwing, but Johnson returns fire and sends Allan down with a combination. Green wants to get up, but the ref recognizes that he's not all there and he calls a stop to it. It's all over!

Replays show that Johnson landed a right hand right behind Green's left ear, then smoked him with another right as Allan was on his way down. Bernstein says the first punch was marginal, but Tarver says Green has to take responsibility for leaning into the punch.

The winner by KO at 0:36 of Round 8, "The Road Warrior" Glen Johnson.

Green tells Jim Gray that he thought he could have continued, but the ref felt otherwise. Johnson looks at the replay and says he knew Green was leaning in the same direction often, so he wanted to get himself in position to land that right hand.

Glen also says he loves Allan like a brother and regrets that both of them couldn't advance. He says they will leave it in the ring and resume their friendship.

Asked about fighting at 168 pounds, Green says he made weight pretty easily and doesn't think it was a mistake to stay at super middleweight.

Johnson talks about the ups and downs he's been through and how he's glad his hard work and persistence has paid off.
