Manny Pacquiao: If He Loses, Floyd Mayweather May Fight Antonio Margarito Next
I can't imagine the pressure Manny Pacquiao has on his shoulders right now.
Less than a week from now Manny will step in the ring with one of the toughest welterweights in the world.
Antonio Margarito may not be the most skilled fighter out there—Shane Mosley exposed that—but he can trade punches with almost anybody. Margarito's relentless attack and vicious body blows made him the most feared welterweight a couple of years ago.
On November 13th the Tijuana Tornado will get a shot at taking down the self-proclaimed greatest boxer to ever live, Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao. Last night on 60 Minutes, Manny expressed he had accomplished all his goals pertaining to boxing, so a win this weekend will only be a bonus.
There have been several reports stating that Pacquiao has not been totally committed to his training. Trying to juggle his political obligations and boxing career has to be really challenging. I can't imagine someone fighting for his eighth title in as many divisions will take this fight lightly. I don't buy Freddie Roach's discontentment with Pacquiao's training; I think it's a psychological game he is playing with Antonio.
Whether Manny is ready or not, it's obvious Margarito is taking this fight very seriously; he reportedly is in the best shape of his life. If he doesn't have challenges making the catchweight limit of 151 pounds, we may see a blood fest. Roach has predicted a late knockout after Manny has entertained the crowd. I think if Manny decides to play with Margarito, he may be in for a rude awakening.
So what happens to the super-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao if Antonio Margarito pulls off the upset? Does Margarito inherit the big payday with Floyd Mayweather? I think that fight would be an easier fight to put together since I doubt Margarito would hesitate to agree to take any drug test to face Floyd Mayweather.
Or does Manny keep that fight since it is a welterweight fight and the recent build-up gives him entitlement?
I think if Manny does lose Saturday night, he may lose his confidence and retire. He has already accomplished what he wanted with boxing if the reports are true; a loss may be just what he needs to totally commit to his family and politics. I did get the feeling he is looking to run for president of the Philippines.
If the scenario does play out with Margarito becoming victorious, we may see Floyd and Margarito in 2011. Maybe that's been Bob Arum's plan all along.
