Top Five Clever Topics for So Very Clever Guy's Girls: Week 10 College Football

Hilary LiDestriNov 5, 2010

Before I begin this week's Clever article, I need to pay my respects to Sparky Anderson and will do so with an article in the next week.

It made the loss of one of my heroes, Bo Schembechler vivid once again.

Clever Girls, Sparky Anderson was the wildly popular coach for the Detroit Tigers baseball club, and Bo Schembechler was the most revered and cherished coach in the history of University of Michigan football. Both of them stood for a style of coaching that seems a thing of the past.  They were both the antithesis of Nick Saban, whom I never tire of vilifying.  It's not just about winning.

Ok, So Very Clever Guy's Girls, as we near the end of college football (choke, gasp, dab tear), it is getting exciting!  I have compiled, for you, some really fantastic conversational pieces strategically designed to redirect the spot light onto YOU.

As I've said before—the point to offering up some of this information is not to challenge or even to show off—simply to show the guys you are not just a pretty face, a hot body or fluff.

So let's get to it—shall we?

Nick Saban Is the Perfect Example Of

Nick Saban alone makes the LSU/Alabama game a good one.

Love has been lost—that is for certain.

Nick Saban, in my estimation, personifies the “hired gun” coaching mentality. Gone are the loyal career coaches like Bo and Joe. Now, it’s all about money and who is willing to feed the ego.

Nick Saban left my alma mater unceremoniously to accept a position as head coach of LSU—he didn’t even coach our bowl game. Then, he left LSU to go to the Miami Dolphins, and I don’t think I’m alone relishing in his failure.

Now, he is with Alabama, and this is going to be a great game.

Clever Girls, you will look brilliant if you ask if Nick once coached Michigan State before he went to LSU—try to do that before the sports commentators do. This proves you know a bit about what is going on and you are not asserting and never will your vast college football knowledge.

It is simply about dazzling the men with your interest, generating conversation and being viewed as more than just a pretty face, a spy or a hanger-on.

This Is Not a Gimme or Iowa

Clever Girls, don’t let anyone try to tell you Iowa is guaranteed a victory over Indiana this weekend.

Even though Indiana has the worst record in the Big Ten, Iowa tends to struggle there. They’ve lost 27 out of 40 of the past matchups, and in the past 15 years, they are only one victory over even. On top of that, they are 3 and 4 in Indiana. This is NOT a gimme.

So, if you sit down to watch this gem with the guys, and they are huffing and puffing about Iowa being about to hand Indiana a thrashing, you might say, “I sure hope so, because they struggle against Indiana and have only won, I think, three of the last seven match ups in Indiana? Or something like that?”

Ending your statements in questions always opens the field for the guys to be able to spew their vast knowledge. It also steers the conversation away from you—if you want it to. Don’t forget, if you get in over your head, ask a question. “Why is that?” or “What do you think about …?”

Kirk Herbstreit Or Seth Davis? What Was the Question? Oh, TCU or Utah?

Here we are in Week 10, and there are still five undefeated teams.

Sadly, none of them are Big Ten, and none of them are named University of Michigan. Damn that Rich Rod. He has GOT to go and, no, I am not sending an engraved invitation to Jim Harbaugh. Frankly, he needs to stay where he is since he is so concerned about academic standards for athletes. I do recall he has a degree in communications—isn’t that THE classic athlete degree?

I have gotten off topic here.

On Monday morning, there will be only four unbeaten teams(no, I do not think Hawaii is going to upset Boise State), but will it be TCU or Utah still standing? This is a cause for great speculation, however, I am standing behind TCU on this.

This game is going to be like Cinderella mud wrestling and guess who will be ringside? Kirk Herbstreit. This is the stage for College GameDay, Clever Girls, so if you like blonds tune in.

I personally think Kirk is a bit overrated in the looks department, but I am more a Seth Davis girl—love the DARK. Oh, if you don’t know who Kirk is, he is the stud of College GameDay on ESPN, and frankly, I’d be happy if they could find a good looking brunette for eye candy.

I should note any girl watching GameDay or football on Saturday at all who admits to thinking Kirk is hot is going to be met with nothing but disdain. So, keep that to yourself. The guys are tired of Kirk.

JoePa Needs To Hold Off until Next Weekend To Log Number 400, Please?

I’m hoping this weekend is not the weekend Joe Paterno will be acknowledged for his 400th win for Penn State. Why?

Because I’d like them to immortalize a victory over Ohio State next week as the benchmark. I’d like every single time anyone ever talked about JoePa’s 400th that Buckeyes are reminded it was the day they got their butts kicked by a mediocre team.

Is it plausible Northwestern will win? Yes. So, get behind me on this one. Clever Guy’s Girls know that Joe Paterno has coached for 61 seasons and has been head coach of Penn State for 45 years. Amazing. Like I said—loyalty. It’s in such shortage these days.

Cam Newton Following in Reggie Bush's Footsteps, Instead of Tim Tebow?

Cam Newton is being investigated.

What does that mean for our Heisman front runner? It will be tough to tell. We will have a winner in about six weeks, so they better hurry up if they plan to deny him the honor based on NCAA violations.

Clever Girls, this is a great opportunity to bring up the fact the NCAA just took Reggie Bush’s Heisman away from him after confirming he had taken vast amounts of money from agents and such during his tenure at USC.

Noteworthy is the fact that Bush won the Heisman with the highest vote in Heisman history. Side note: the trophy was denied Vince Young of The University of Texas—something I cannot abide by.
