Randy Moss: 10 Reasons He Helps the Tennessee Titans

David DanielsNov 4, 2010

Randy Moss was claimed off waivers Wednesday by the Tennessee Titans.

Before the pickup, the Titans were already considered a top Super Bowl contender.  After the pickup, the Titans are now the top contender.

To see Moss' full effect on Tennessee, you must look beyond what he brings in talent alone.  The addition helps every single player on the Titans roster positively in some way.

Specifically, here are the 10 ways Randy Moss will improve the Tennessee Titans:

10. Energize The Team

No one is more excited about Randy Moss coming to Tennessee than the people in the Titans organization themselves.

When cornerback Cortland Finnegan heard that Randy Moss was picked up by the Titans he described his reaction to a reporter saying: "I was excited.  I jumped up and down and ran around like a kid."

Bo Scaife told the press when he heard the news he said, "Thank you Jesus."

Finnegan, Scaife, Chris Johnson, Kenny Britt, Michael Griffin, along with Jeff Fisher and Mike Reinfeldt have already told the media about how happy they are about the acquisition.

9. Boost The Team's Confidence

You can't succeed without confidence.

What message does the signing of a veteran superstar send to a team?  That the coaching staff believes they can win right now.

The players will receive that message and play like they are the team to beat in the NFL.

The Titans won't travel to Miami in week 10 with the confidence of a 5-3 football team.  They'll go in with the swagger of a top contender.

8. Remove The Extra Defender From The Box

Say goodbye to those eight and nine men in the box.  Chris Johnson definitely won't miss them.

Teams won't be able to focus on stopping the run anymore with Moss in two-tone blue.

Johnson is averaging a 4.1 yards a carry on the season, 1.5 yards less than he had last year.  With Moss forcing safeties to back off, that number will receive a significant boost.

CJ2K may just get that 2500 rushing yards after all.  Well, not really, but he should lead the league in rushing yards by the end of the season.

7. Stretch The Field

With Moss running deep, holes are going to open up underneath for all of the other Titans receiving targets.

Nate Washington, Justin Gage, Damian Williams, Lavelle Hawkins, Bo Scaife, Craig Stevens, and Jared Cook will all see their production increase.

Bo Scaife talked to the media about the Moss signing saying, "...he's going to open it up for me as well.  He plays on the same side as me so I'm looking forward to having him on the field and I know everyone on our team is going to welcome him with open arms."

6. Eliminate The Ability to Double Team Kenny Britt

After a 225 yard, three touchdown performance, you know the double teams were going to begin coming hard on the second year standout.  A player with five straight games with an end zone appearance is going to the focus of a defense when there is no other major threat on the outside.

When Kenny Britt does come back from his hamstring injury, there is no way defenses will be able to key on him with Moss lining up on the other side of the field.

5. Provide Another Safety Valve

SAN DIEGO - OCTOBER 31: Quarterback Vince Young #10 of the Tennessee Titans drops back to pass against the San Diego Chargers in the second quarter at Qualcomm Stadium on October 31, 2010 in San Diego, California. The Chargers defeated the Titans 33-25.

It's not like the Titans don't already have big targets: Kenny Britt is 6'3", Justin Gage is 6'4", and Jared Cook is 6'5", but another one wouldn't hurt; especially one that at one time had a 51 inch vertical.

The bigger the better.

When Vince Young gets under pressure it's always nice to have one of those receivers that have a half a foot on any corner to just throw it up to.

Moss is the king of the jump ball.

4. Help Improve Cortland Finnegan's Play

Cortland Finnegan hasn't played like the All-Pro caliber of player he was in years past.

Finnegan will now be forced to line up against Moss in practice.  The increased level of competition will help Finnegan get back to being the shutdown corner he can be.

3. Increase 3rd Down Conversion Rate

Moss will obviously help increase the 3rd down conversion rate.  More talent equals easier execution.

The Titans just lost a game at San Diego where the Chargers controlled the football 15 more minutes than they did.

Tennessee just couldn't stay on the field going four for 13 converting on third downs on the day.

Fatigue was a factor in the defense not being able keep the Chargers out of the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

Having Randy Moss will help the offense pick up more first downs when they're forced to pass which at the same time gives the defense more time to rest on the sideline.

2. Be a Big Play Threat

This will actually eliminate the Titans defenses rest time, but it will definitely energize them.

Any game, any drive, any play, Moss can break free from a secondary and have nothing but green between him and the end zone.

The combination of Moss and Chris Johnson forms the most explosive halfback-wide receiver duo in NFL history.

1. Give The Offense Another Option

The Titans interior offensive line has had its struggles this season.  Even with Moss eliminating the extra man in the box, the middle may continue to fail to open up running lanes.

If that does occur, the Titans should be fine.  A passing attack which includes Moss, Kenny Britt, Nate Washington, and Bo Scaife features enough talent to win football games with a pass first approach.

Receiving Core Transformation

Look at the change in the Titans receiving core from 2008 to 2010 and marvel at the increase of talent:
