College Football Rankings: 10 Hot Seat Coaches Who Need a Week 9 Win
In yet another edition of College Football Rankings, it's time to take a fresh gander at 10 hot seat coaches that desperately need a win in Week 9 of the 2010 season.
There are bound to be a couple changes from this week's list and last week's list, as there were a couple coaches who managed to cool things off with a clutch win.
But fear not, in their place is a new crop of nail-biting coaches.
So behold! The 10 college coaches who need a win more than all the rest.
10. Mike Sherman, Texas A&M
1 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: Texas Tech
Why His Seat Is Warm: Still needs a signature win, and a blowout win over Kansas is not going to cut it.
How He Can Cool It Off: Take care of Texas Tech at home this week, and then go from there.
Sherman's Aggies should be able to take care of the Red Raiders on Saturday, but things get pretty rough after that. They host No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 14 Nebraska, in between which is a game on the road at No. 25 Baylor.
Sherman desperately needs to produce a .500 or better season. And given Texas A&M's final five games of the season, managing to do so would be very impressive indeed.
9. Dennis Erickson, Arizona State
2 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: Washington State
Why His Seat Is Warm: The Sun Devils have lost four out of five, and are well on their way to another sub-.500 campaign.
How He Can Cool It Off: Avoid losing to the lowly Cougars.
Arizona State is coming off a bad loss at Cal, and needs to find a way to beat Washington State. It shouldn't be too difficult, but a loss would be pretty devastating for the former 49ers head coach.
Erickson's first season at ASU was definitely a success, but the Sun Devils have won only five and four games in each of the last two seasons.
With games against USC, Stanford and Arizona still to come, they need to win winnable games the rest of the way.
8. Stan Parrish, Ball State
3 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: at Kent State
Why His Seat Is Warm: Has produced only four wins in his season and a half. The Cardinals have also lost three in a row.
How He Can Cool It Off: Pull off a conference upset over Kent State.
Under Brady Hoke, the Cardinals went 12-2 in 2008 and were named to the GMAC Bowl. Hoke bolted for San Diego State, and Stan Parrish has done little to prove that he's a rightful successor.
7. Ron English, Eastern Michigan
4 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: Toledo
Why His Seat Is Warm: Didn't win a game in his first season as head coach of the Eagles, and has produced only one so far in his second year.
How He Can Cool It Off: Beat Toledo, for starters.
Ron English can't afford to let his team lose the rest of their games. Any coach that can win only one game in two seasons doesn't deserve to coach any team. Not even in Pop Warner.
6. Todd Dodge, North Texas
5 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: at Western Kentucky
Why His Seat Is Warm: Dodge hasn't proven to be the guy to take North Texas back to the top of the Sun Belt.
How He Can Cool It Off: Get win number two before Western Kentucky.
Not surprisingly, Saturday's matchup of Sun Belt teams features some pretty awful records. Both the Mean Green and the Hilltoppers have only one win, but Dodge definitely needs a win more than his counterpart on the Western Kentucky sideline.
You don't care? What do you mean you don't care?! Don't you know that this is the Sun Belt?!
5. Rich Rodriguez, Michigan
6 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: at Penn State
Why His Seat Is Warm: Rich Rod's seat was warm at the start of the season. Thanks in large part to Denard Robinson, Rodriguez has already matched last season's total of five wins (which is a high for his short tenure at Michigan). But his team has lost two in a row, and firerichrodriguez.com is alive and well.
How He Can Cool It Off: Unleash Denard Robinson on Penn State's leaky rush defense.
Michigan should be able to handle the Nittany Lions, especially if Robinson can carve up their defense, which gives up over 140 yards on the ground every game.
Rodriguez definitely needs a win here. He can't lose too many more between now and the Wolverines' games with Wisconsin and Ohio State to wrap up the season.
4. Frank Spaziani, Boston College
7 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: Clemson
Why His Seat Is Warm: The Eagles have dropped five in a row after starting out 2-0. Boston College is dead last in the ACC's Atlantic division.
How He Can Cool It Off: Just beat Clemson.
It doesn't matter who Boston College beats, just so long as they beat somebody. They just need to stop losing.
It's not going to be easy to beat Clemson, who is ahead of them in the standings and has won two in a row, but at least Spaziani has home field advantage.
3. Dan Hawkins, Colorado
8 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: at Oklahoma
Why His Seat Is Warm: Hawkins' squad has dropped three in a row and the Buffaloes have shown little improvement since he came aboard in 2006. With Colorado set to join the Pac-12, the brass may be looking for an excuse to make a change.
How He Can Cool It Off: Find a way to hang with Oklahoma.
Hawkins' path towards redemption is probably not going to be helped in the Buffaloes' road trip to Oklahoma, the No. 9 team in the BCS. Colorado is obviously not going to win, but Hawkins might be able to buy himself some time if his team manages to be competitive.
2. Paul Wulff, Washington State
9 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: at Arizona State
Why His Seat Is Warm: His team has lost six in a row and is the laughing stock of the Pac-10.
How He Can Cool It Off: Pull off a road win against ASU.
Wulff may have kept his spot from last week's hot seat list, but he doesn't deserve too much blame for losing to Stanford in Palo Alto. Wulff's team actually played Andrew Luck and the Cardinal pretty well, scoring 21 in the fourth quarter to avoid losing a laugher.
Arizona State is coming off a stomping at Cal, but they're not going to be easy prey. Wulff is probably going to be on this list next week too. Unless he gets fired, of course.
1. Mike Locksley, New Mexico
10 of 10
Week 9 Opponent: at Colorado State
Why His Seat Is Warm: Because it's teams like his that are keeping the Mountain West in the national dog house.
How He Can Cool It Off: Pull of a repeat of last season's only win by beating Colorado State again.
The Lobos are awful, but the Rams might be just as bad. New Mexico's only win in 2009 came at home against Colorado State, so it's probably not going to be as easy to do so again on the road. Mike Locksley's days may be numbered.
