BCS Rankings 2010: Auburn Leaps Boise State, and Oregon Is Still Disrespected
Auburn is the new No. 1 ranked team in the new Week 9 2010 BCS rankings, after previous No. 1 Oklahoma lost to Missouri yesterday.
Auburn's rise to the top of the computer rankings was unexpected to many, but their quality wins vs. ranked teams cannot be overlooked.
Boise State will always be a major talking point during the ongoing BCS controversy, and this week added fuel to the fire.
The Broncos are now No. 3 in the most current rankings, which were announced Sunday night.
Next, I will discuss five things we learned from these rankings, and how they affect the remainder of the college football season.
1.) An Undefeated Auburn Will Play For The National Title
1 of 6
Auburn now has the inside track to the BCS national title game.
As a member of the SEC, Auburn plays quality opponents almost every week, and many of them are currently top 25 ranked schools.
Auburn has already beaten four teams who are currently ranked in the top 25 of the latest BCS standings, No. 12 LSU, No. 19 Arkansas, No. 20 South Carolina and No. 21 Mississippi State.
Those are some very impressive wins, and they have yet to play Alabama, who are one of the best teams in the country.
If Auburn were to beat Alabama and win the SEC title game, the Tigers will have earned the right to play for the BCS championship.
2.) Boise State Cannot Help Itself Anymore
2 of 6
Boise State is trying to become the first-ever school from a non-BCS conference to reach the BCS title game.
The Broncos have already made multiple BCS bowl games, including last year's win over TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.
Boise is currently ranked third in the latest BCS poll, after being leapfrogged by Oklahoma last week, and Auburn this week.
Boise State is in the midst of their cupcake WAC schedule, and has no quality teams remaining to play.
All Boise can do is hope other teams lose, but even if Oregon or Auburn were to fall, teams like Alabama and Wisconsin could jump them.
The Broncos could beat any team in the country on a neutral field, but unfortunately, it's unlikely they'll play for the BCS title game.
3.) The BCS Computers Are Quite Inconsistent
3 of 6
The BCS rankings are comprised of several computer rankings.
Strangely, several of the computers differ greatly in their rankings, and some have different teams rated number one.
The Billingsley computer ranking has a top five of TCU at No. 1, followed in order by Auburn, Alabama, Boise State, and LSU.
This computer is laughable, and further proves why the BCS system is an epic failure.
Auburn, the number one overall team is ranked first in three computer rankings (Anderson & Hester, Colley Matrix, and Wolfe), while Missouri is No. 1 in two computers, despite being ranked sixth overall in the BCS standings.
These computer rankings are an embarrassment to college football. If the BCS does not find a way to consistently rank these teams, how are we to know which computer to believe?
4.) Alabama Still a BCS Title Contender
4 of 6
The Alabama Crimson Tide may still be the best team in college football. The BCS computers have rated the Crimson Tide as the best one loss team.
With their brutal SEC schedule well underway, winning the conference could allow Alabama to claim a top 2 BCS spot.
Auburn and Alabama still have to play each other, and if Alabama beat the Tigers, they could be on their way to the BCS title game.
While coach Nick Saban and his players are not undefeated, they have plenty to be hopeful about, because if any of the top teams lose, Alabama has the most to gain.
The Tide are currently seventh in the BCS rankings, but could climb a spot each week going forward.
5.) Oregon Is Being Disrespected
5 of 6
Oregon was the No. 1 ranked team in multiple polls heading into week 9, but find themselves looking up at the No. 1 BCS spot.
Oregon has displayed historic offensive numbers, and have quality wins in a competitive Pac-10 conference, including a strong win vs. Stanford.
If the Ducks finish their season unbeaten, they could still not play for the BCS title this January.
Teams like Auburn, Wisconsin, Alabama, and Boise State could all jump Oregon during the next few weeks.
Oregon can put up 50 points on anyone, and it would be wrong to deny them a shot to play for the national title, if they win the Pac-10 unbeaten.
BCS Mayhem at an All-Time High
6 of 6
Every year, it seems the BCS gives fans and players more reasons to hate it, and 2010 has become no exception.
Consistency is something you need in these rankings, and we are not getting that right now.
Teams are being unfairly disrespected who have no losses, and have multiple quality wins.
Can we trust the BCS? After 2010, we will finally see the BCS computer rankings are unable to determine the two best teams in the country.
Whether the college presidents choose to change the system, is another matter entirely.
