Mexico's Top Five In Soccer
The recent news of the election of Jose "Chepo" De La Torre as Coach of the Mexican National Football/Soccer Team has electrified the American Continent.
In response to the selection of the new coach and the growing popularity of Mexican Players, I have decided to write about the top five players from Mexico and include a surprise of maximum potential.
The Mexican Football Federation also known for its initials in Spanish as FMF has a long and colorful history since it was founded in 1927 although some of the clubs such as Chivas and Club America date back to before its founding.
While the world has been paying attention to Argentina and Brazil, Mexico has been dazzling the world with its football although it has been now noticed during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and after Manchester United signed Javier Chicharito Hernandez from Chivas of Guadalajara.
Manchester United even played a game against Chivas of Guadalajara in its new stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
The teams that are associated or members of the FMF have agreements with teams from other countries. Chivas of Guadalajara has an association with CD Chivas USA, FC Dallas has an association with Tigres UANL, and Santos Laguna has an agreement with Celtic FC.
Javier Chicharito Hernandez
1 of 5
Javier Chicharito Hernandez was known in Mexico and in Chivas of Guadalajara until Jorge Vergara sold him to Manchester United. Vergara later regretted the move to sell Hernandez but it was too late.
He comes from a long line of football/soccer players in which his father and grandfather were prominent in the Mexican League.
His father was known as Chicharo Hernandez and participated in the 1986 FIFA World Cup In Mexico. His grandfather Tomas Balcazar was part of Chivas of Guadalajara.
His period with Chivas of Guadalajara was marked with victories in the Mexican League against teams such as Necaxa and victories with the National Team against countries such as Colombia.
Hernandez was also a participant in his country's match against France during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Since his arrival at Old Trafford, he has scored 1 goal in 4 plays with no assists in the 2010-2011 Premier League. He is definitely one to be watched.
Giovanni Dos Santos
2 of 5
Giovanni Dos Santos is currently with the Tottenham Hotspurs and is in my opinion a great player even though he has yet to score or make an impact with the Spurs during the 2010-2011 Premier League.
Liverpool wanted to sign him as a member of their team at one point.
He has had early success in Barcelona and Mexico (where he was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup) which did not materialize with the Spurs.
The Spurs ended sending him to Ipswich Town and Galatsaray (Turkey).
There have been rumors that he may be sent to another European Club but that remains to be seen.
Andres Guardado
3 of 5
Andres Guardado is one of the players from Mexico who has not received much publicity. He is a midfielder for Deportivo La Coruna in Spain with 2 goals within 6 games in the 2010-2011 Spanish First Division.
He has also made strides in the Mexican National Football/Soccer Team including the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Guardado has also played for Atlas FC in Mexico with success.
He made recent news by being one of the signers of a petition against Nestor De La Torre for the scandal in Mexican Football/Soccer.
The petition stated that the signers would not play for Mexico if called. He did go to the game against Venezuela and was injured.
Regardless of his defects, he has been able to show success in Deportivo La Coruna and Mexico.
Guillermo Ochoa
4 of 5
Guillermo Ochoa is a goalkeeper for Club America and the Mexican National Football/Soccer Team. He has had 37 International Caps but has not scored goals.
He has been effective as a goalkeeper for Club America and Mexico and was effective in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
It has been said that he is the most effective of the goalkeepers in that he has been able to deflect most of the attempts that come his way.
Rafaek Marquez
5 of 5
Rafael Marquez currently plays for the New York Red Bulls and Mexico. He once played for FC Barcelona.
He started his career with FC Atlas and moved on to help Mexico win the 1999 Confederation Cup and the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
He was also instrumental in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. His record with the New York Red Bulls in the 2010 MLS Season is currently 1 goal within 9 games. He arrived at New York shortly after the end of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Marquez could be the one to watch for the 2011 MLS Season.
